TiVo Changed My Life, But HDTV Is Ruining Everything

Now that I possess the ability to time shift effortlessly, I swore that TiVo
had made live TV watching a thing of the past. Never again would I fall
victim to the scheduling whims of faceless network executives. Never again
would I watch lame commercials and promos: with a bloop, bloop! BLOOP! of
the TiVo remote, they were gone. And never again would this idiot cede
control of his idiot box to anyone.

But that was before a young punk named HDTV strolled into my life...

Tivo has had a Hidef box since last March.

For DirectTV satellite systems only, unless I am mistaken. Tivo does
not have a general purpose HD box you can buy at the store which will
work for OTA, satellite or cable systems. And likely will not have one
soon, given that to record HD, you need the MPEG-2 digital data stream,
not the component or DVI output. Tivo has shown off a prototype DVR,
IIRC, with a cable card slot and ATSC tuner which could in theory
replace the set top box from the cable company. But the cable companies
are undercutting Tivo with their own HD DVRs which require only a
monthly fee, no upfront purchase cost. I may have to cave in and get one
from Comcast, but based on my limited research, I should only get the
newer SA8300HD model if it is available, not the older SA8000HD box.

Time-Warner's new 8000 series high-def DVRs have similarly spoiled me,
completely. It can record up to 20 hours of high def or 180 hours of
standard-def (or a mix of both say 10 hours HD and 90 hours SD) It ought not
to be long before TiVo releases a high def box.
There is not any output to record my programs into say a DVD recorder...yet.

Yes, the one offered by Comcast (Motorola) is awesome too.

Too bad Tivo is so far behind in the technology.

That sounds like the Scientific Atlanta box. I've got it too, and it is
great. I don't know how one would watch HD without it. I wish it had about
double storage-size ... not an issue yet, but as the amount of HD grows,
it may become an issue, but I'm sure there will be a new box by then.

There IS the 8300 as well; I hear the output to VHS has been activated
on that series ... presumably this would work for DVD as well.

It should be possible with a DVI or HDMI interface since the signal
remains digital in those. The TiVo would need a high-speed hardware
encoder if the stream is not in the correct format for storage.

Yeah, but cable will prolly never offer an ATSC tuner in their boxes.
That might not matter, though.

The DirecTV HD DVR will record from satellite or OTA signals.
It has two ATSC tuners enabling recording of two OTA HD signals
at the same time. The ATSC tuners won't work without a DirecTV
satellite signal.

You people who cannot live without TiVo and/or HDTV should get a life. TiVo
has never made a profit and will probably be bankrupt by 2006. Their home
office in Alviso was giving their boxes away free one day a few weeks ago.
The new Comcast DVR service is superior technically and has cheaper rental.
The box is free. Other cable companies will follow.

This is incorrect.

The ATSC tuners work just fine without even connecting the satellite cable,
and you get a 30-minute buffer on each tuner.

What you don't get without a DirecTV DVR subscription is the TiVo features,
and a DirecTV DVR subscription of course requires a DirecTV subscription.

Note that you do *not* need a DirecTV satellite signal all the time to have
those TiVo features...you could get the guide data from the satellite then
disconnect the satellite wire and run until guide data ran out. You could
also use is without guide data (although who would want to).

At least on the HR10-250, it authorizes the DVR service at start up of the
box, and unless it sees a "de-auth" packet in the satellite stream, it will
continue to work as a recorder.

They were giving away the TiVos as a promotional stunt - to comcast
customers who found they either couldn't get the comcast dvr or hated it...

With my Hughes HD Tivo you cannot enable dual tuners (ATSC or SAT) without
having both SAT inputs enabled. With only one SAT input enabled, you only
get access to a single tuner at a time even though you have both ATSC tuners
and one SAT tuner available. Are you saying that with NO SAT inputs enabled
you are able to use both ATSC tuners at the same time? That has not been my
experience.

With no sat inputs *connected*, yes, I can use both ATSC tuners at the same
time. It's a weird software issue where you have to enable both satellite
tuners (tell it you will use OTA and satellite with two satellite
connections), then change back to "OTA only". Both ATSC tuners then remain
enabled, even though both satellite inputs are now disabled and there are
no connections from the dish.
