to connect tablet and laptop

My Amazon Fire Tablet does not seem to connect to my Toshiba laptop. I have tried three different data transfer cables but no joy. It worked fine a few weeks ago.
Any suggestions?
Why is the laptop no longer recognising the tablet? There is no sound when I plug in the DTC.
I want to transfer photos from tablet to laptop. I was able to do this before

what cable do you use is it also the charging cable
because meaby the settings can be changed to only charging and no data exchange
