In Sept 04 I bought a Toshiba 42HP83 plasma. Great picture, nice
unit. In Nov. after about 30 seconds after turn on the picture faded
out to black until unit was on for 30 minutes to 45 minutes. Happened
every time. Finally found a service shop willing to come and look at
it. They pulled it back to shop on Dec 16. After a couple of days
they called back with news that it needed a circuit board and it was
backordered until the end of Jan. After the holidays I called Toshiba
America and made inquiries about the delay. After many calls they
told me they called the factory in Japan and was told they had no
plans to manufacture the part. I had to get RMA and return the unit
to Best Buy. I replaced it with a Samsung DLP unit. Works great.

I wonder whats up with Toshiba not supplying parts for new units?
Seems like a pretty bad business practice.

Had a problem with my 42HP83 about a month ago, one of the cooling fans
went out and the TV would turn itself off as soon as it started to get
warm. The local shop hasd no problem getting parts and repairing it.
Sorry to hear about your problem. I really like my Toshiba.

I have seen a trend with Toshiba in recent years that is consistent with
your experience. They seem to be cutting to close on their estimates of
supplies of some parts. Backorders seem to go one for many months on some
parts and they don't seem to give realistic ETAs. Otherwise, I like a lot
of their products, but I'd be much less likely to buy one based on what we
have seen in this regard over the last few years.
