When I power up, the touch screen functions normally. As soon as I enter my password and press Return I can control the cursor only with an external mouse. What have I done wrong please?

You can try recalibrating the display...
On Android tablets... depending on the version and the brand of tablet, this info may slightly change.
Usually you can find the calibration option in "Settings" and then "Display".
On Windows 8 Tablets... Tap "Start" and then type in "Calibrate". Then tap "Setting"s and select "Calibrate the screen for pen and touch input". Finally tap "Calibrate" and follow the instructions.
