There might be US Toyota plants, but do you really think all the money Toyota makes selling cars "Stays in the US?". So what if a few parts to my GM car were made in Mexico or Canada, at the end of the day, most of my money stays in the US. I send enough of my money overseas just by shopping at Wal-Mart. At least I can get cheaper replacement parts at the autoparts store down the street if something needs to be replaced (in the same day at that).
Bringing up the Ford Pinto is pointless. The last Pinto was made in 1980. Bringing up faulty tires is also pointless, name 1 car company that MAKES tires.
Here is my point, if people maintain their vehicles (oil changes, check and change tires, brakes and brake fluid, tranny fluid, air filter, belts, hoses, spark plugs and wires and everything else listed as GENERAL MAINTENANCE), you shouldn't have much go wrong other than normal wear and tear items UNLESS you ABUSE and/or MODIFY your car . The last thing I need to worry about is buying a new car and then have the gas pedal stick or brakes fail before 6 months of owning it.
No car company is perfect, but recalls about possible failures that could cause death vs. little stuff is a big deal to me. Most American recalls that I can think of that actually relate to the car in recent years (not tires, etc.) are small stuff that won't KILL you, unlike Toyota's issues and the recall on the bad Honda airbags.
Everybody has their opinion though and this is mine.
