I simply want play Spotify from Amazon Fire TV Cube on Onkyo HT-R550 Receiver, but the only way I have found to do it is making the audio go through my receiver, then TV, and then back to the Receiver.

Audio Path: Fire TV Cube [HDMI] – [HDMI] Onkyo HT-R550 [HDMI] - [HDMI] Sony KDL-46Z5100 [Digital Audio] - Onkyo HT R550.

To make matters worse, I have to also change the TV audio from “TV Speakers” to “Audio System”, and then must undo that setting so my family can use the TV normally without the Onkyo on.

I think these restrictions are the issue.
  • Amazon Fire TV Cube only has HDMI output
  • Onkyo HT-R550 Receiver only has HDMI passthru (so I can not get to the audio from HDMI inputs)
  • Must turn Sony KDL-46Z5100 on, and then turn TV audio from "TV Speakers" to “Audio System” to get the audio to come out the TV audio out jacks.

What am I missing?

Solution
You can get an HDMI audio extractor (or input selector with audio extraction).
https://www.amazon.com/ViewHD-Extractor-Optical-Toslink-Converter/dp/B00KBHX072
Connect the Recast HDMI out to it. Connect the HDMI output of it to the TV and the digital audio output (coax or optical) to the receiver. Assign that connection (say opt 1) to an input name (say cbl/sat) in the receiver set up. Select 5.1 output on the extractor.
Make sure you get one that will still pass audio via HDMI to the TV so the TV can be used without the receiver.
