I learned that DVI-D will not accept the audio signal being passed from the HDMI on the Roku, but am curious if the following cable will work and still give me HD video. This cable is HDMI to component AV. http://www.amazon.com/Cable-5-RCA-Audio-Component-Plated/dp/B00RVC5KQ4/ref=pd_sim_23_15?ie=UTF8&dpID=4101lbl004L&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=1Y8ZDBMHVYWW73BWJNXV. Do I need to purchase a (more expensive) HDMI to DVI cable with RCA connectors for audio or will the aforementioned cable work and give me a HD picture?

That cable (or any cable) will not work at all. If is designed for special PC applications and will not convert HDMI digital video and audio to analog component video and analog stereo audio. You would need an active converter to do this.

but it would give you lower picture quality so a better solution is to use an HDMI audio extractor like this one

Use HDMI to connect the Roku to the extractor and an HDMI to DVD cable to the TV, An analog audio cable from the extractor to the TV would give you sound.

He probably meant DVI.

Why can't you just use the HDMI connection from the Roku to the TV? A 42" Sony TV should have HDMI inputs unless it's pretty old.

The TV does, in fact have a DVI-D style connector and I can get video to pass from the Roku box using a standard HDMI to HDMI cable and an HDMI to DVI-D adapter. But DVI doesn't seem to support the audio that the Roku is sending down the pipe. I know the audio is present because I can pass video and audio directly across the HDMI cable to another TV that has an HDMI port. This Sony TV does not have HDMI input port however. So I bought an HDMI to Component converter and a set of component cables and they should be here within a couple of days. We'll see if that works.
