TV doesn't seem to recognise coaxial audio out

I have an RCA (RLDED4016A-D specifically) that has a coaxial audio out plug, and when I connect a cable to it the TV just keeps on using its built-in speakers. There are no menu options on this thing to speak of that seem to pertain to setting which audio output it's using.

I suppose the TV could just be a terrible model with a port that doesn't work, and I could know absolutely nothing when it comes to basic audio set-up, but any insight as to what might be going on would be appreciated.

In case it matters, I mean to connect this to a sound bar via a coax to optical adapter I got from monoprice, which by the little red light in the optical port seems to be working so far as I can tell.

Solution

Page 12 of the owner's manual shows an Audio menu with a digital output selection. You may have to change that in order for it to work.

You may not be able to disable the TV's internal speaker unless there is a menu option for it. Connecting a cable to the digital audio output does not disable the internal speakers. You may have to settle for volume adjustment only.

You may wish to post the model of the adapter and soundbar for other forum posters that might provide possible solutions.

Hah! Simple enough as that was! All I had to do was turn down (as you said) the volume on the TV and fiddle with the sound bar's volume. Guess I was expecting it to be like when you connect headphones and it switches automatically, but nope. Thanks!
