(this was originally posted to alt.cellular.motorola - I meant to post it
here)

I have a Motorola V60s. It is about 6 months old, with 43 hours total
usage. I got it new from Verizon. It has started giving me an "Unable to
charge" message.

The phone is adult used and has not been dropped, abused, or anything else
that might damage it. It is still under warranty (got it thru Verizon's
website).

When I turn the phone off, and then insert the phone-to-charger connector,
and then plug the charger into the wall socket, the phone turns itself on
(something I did not know it could do) and tells me that it is unable to
charge.

About two weeks ago, this first happened intermittently. Now it is refusing
to charge at all. Initially I thought it might be the charger (Moto OEM,
came with the phone) - perhaps it wasn't seating properly? Reinsertion of
the charger phone connector a couple of times seemed to encourage it to
charge (inspection of the connectors pins, and their spring-like hooks looks
fine, no tarnish, no out of alignment - looks to me to be just the way it
was when it came out of the box). But now, reinsertion does not work at all
to make it charge up.

The problem It does not appear to be battery related -- I have two Motorola
OEM batteries, both bought new - a slim (came with the phone) and a high
capacity (bought a month or two later). This "unable to charge" occurs no
matter what battery I try. Battery contacts and phone contacts appear clean.

Could this be a charger problem ?? -- since the phone "knows" the charger is
inserted, I tend to think not -- but then again, I do not really know what I
am dealing with here. Or is this a sign that the phone is toast? And what
do I do about this? Walk into a Verizon company store? Do they take weeks
to figure out the problem, or give loaners, or what?

Advice is most welcome.

TIA

Hello Albert,

If the phone is not damaged or corroded, bring it to any Verizon Wireless
corporate (not an agent, or mall kiosk) store. The staff will replace the
phone, and/or the charger, and/or the battery, as needed. If you have a
phone book in your phone, they will probably be able to transfer it to the
replacement phone, if a replacement (FRU-Field Replacement Unit) is
necessary.

They can usually do this the same day that you bring it in, if the
components are in inventory.

I"m having the same "issues" with mine (both of them). Additionally the one
I use will at times discharge the battery in less than an hour. I've
actually watched the battery meter drop. NOt sure what's going on with them
but it's not performing as well as my 60i's have performed.

Get some spray electrical contact cleaner, available at your local Radio
Shack or Home Depot type store.
With the battery out of the phone, Spray the contacts on the phone and the
charger, gently scrub with a soft tooth brush. Also spray the battery and
phones battery contacts.
This "may" fix the problem. It did on my two v60i's.

It sounds like the battery won't take a charge. Might have to purchase
a new battery.

My v60s is doing just fine for the moment, will keep an eye out for
any problems..

Thank you all -- smacked**, jdoe, Brad and Diamond Dave -

Visited a Verizon (company) store. They initially thought it might be a
contact problem, and cleaned out the contacts. They said it then worked OK
for them. But just to make sure, just before leaving the store, I tried it
out again on their electricity and, again, got an "unable to charge." At
that point the tech tried a brand new Moto charger, and that charged
perfectly -- so she said that it must be an intermittent problem with the
charger. End of problem. They took back the defective, old charger and
replaced it with the new one at not cost to me. At this point, everything
seems to be fine. It appears the charger was the problem. I certainly hope
this fixed it -- the next few months will tell.

Thanks again to all who helped out.

Trust me....you'll have to keep having the chargers replaced all the time.
Bad design that Moto never changed.

Do you have *anything* good to say about Verizon and/or Motorola?

==================
WHOOPS! I accidentally posted this as a new message.
Now I am reposting in the correct thread...
==================
I have the same problem on a V710 purchased three weeks ago at Verizon
wireless store.

I need to insert the charger 3 or 4 times to avoid the warning "Unable to
charge".

This started around the time that I began using a Motorola "Y" splitter
cable which allows you to charge the phone and bluetooth headset at the same
time. But in fact, the problem occurs even without the special cable.*

First, I will try cleaning the battery and cable contacts, but I doubt that
this is related. I never have this problem on my car charge cable... Next, I
will try using the 2nd charger that came with the headset. It is the same
exact model. If that fails, I will try using my old v60i charger which is
compatible but offers slightly higher available current. Finally, I will get
Verizon to replace one or both chargers. I bet that "Unable to charge" means
that the phone is getting insufficient current.

For those of you that are not aware, a "Y" splitter cable is sold by
Motorola for use with this phone and the only disclaimers are:

1. Do not use for two phones. Use only for a phone
and a headset (this is because the headset draws
very little current during charge)

2. The total charge time of both devices may be
slightly longer. The cable does not charge in
sequence like batteries in a stand up charger.
It simply splits the available current to both
devices, so a depleted phone is fast-charge state
may take a bit longer.

Hello again Albert,

Restraints of full disclosure prohibit me from detailing the continium of
my (not-so-exclusive) knowledge, but it will probably be a matter of a few
days, or weeks, before you can tell if the problem is fixed. And, if the
problem is only a bad charger.

It seems not. Why he visits this newsgroup is beyond me since he only vents
about how bad VZ is.

Maybe it's because his wife/girlfriend/both don't let him get a word in
edgewise when he's off the net.
