Unable to view raw images in PS-CS w/Mac OS-X

I hope someone can give me a pointer with this problem I'm having moving
from a Windows PC to a Mac. On my PC, I had PS-CS installed, with the
Camera Raw plugin. Everything works fine. I can access and manipuldate
my raw images from my Nikon D70.

I just bought a Mac G5 with 10.3. I'm waiting for the new CDs to arrive
from Adobe (fortunately converting a Windows license to a Mac license
isn't too big a deal except for the waiting time) so I downloaded the 30-
day trial version of PS. I then downloaded and installed the Camera Raw
plugin into the /Applications/Adobe Photoshop CS/Plug-Ins/File Formats
directory, as per instructions. I restarted PS, navigated to a nef file,
double clicked on it and got the following error message:

"Unable to use the Camer Raw plug-in. It is not compatible with this
host."

I searched around on the net but found few hits with useful information.
One person said that I needed to install NikonView. So I did that and
noticed that a couple of plugin files from its installation were copied
to the PhotoShop directory. I thought that was cool. Maybe, indeed, I
was missing some magic Nikon specific files. I restarted PS.
Unfortunately, I got the same error. I'm running out of ideas. Does
anyone have any suggestion as to what I might do next?

As a last resort, I will call Adobe for help. They already said they
won't support someone with a trial license and I don't want to wait an
additional week until my new CDs (and serial number) arrive.

Don't know but have you considered that the trial version may not be
compatible with plugins. Many trial versions are crippled in one way or
another.

There were several threads on the Photoshop NG about conflicts between
CS and the Nikon RAW plug-in. To get NEF files to open with CS RAW
people were advised to remove or rename the Nikon plug-in from the
Photoshop folder.

Dunno why this would be a problem with Mac and not with Windoze, but
it's easy to do ... let us know if this fixes the problem.

You did download the appropriate *Mac* plugin, right? Force of habit does
things to long-time Windows users ;-)

What version does PS CS tell you it has registered? (Under *Camera* RAW
in about plugins.) Mine is v 2.3.

I run this onna Mac, osX.3.7 also, and I generally open the (Canon) RAW
files through the browser.... Shouldn't make a difference, unless the
NEF files are linked to- perhaps an older version of PS?

I did indeed consider that. From one forum I was looking at yesterday,
however, I read that someone was doing "raw" photo work with a trial
version. He might have gotten his facts wrong and so that could be the
problem. No way to know for sure until I get the new CDs. That takes 5
business days and I'm really in a rush.

I would have asked that question, too . Unfortunately, I did download
the correct version.

Sorry, but it's easy to miss the obvious sometimes

I know though from personal experience that the trial version is complete in
every way, including the ACR plugin, so something else must be wrong.
Whatever the trial is doing wrong the real version will too. At least you'll
have support available though.

Just one question here. I have followed the thread with interest. I run
a G4 dual processor Mac with the latest 2.3 RAW plugin.
Now, when you say about reading RAW files from the PS browser, do you
mean from the camera or from your hard drive. I find my Canon Digital
rebel does not show as a drive in the browser, whereas a previous
pocket Minolta did. So, should my Camera show as a drive?

OK, I found the problem. Everything now works fine. In case anyone else
has the same problem, I'll explain what I did. First, thanks to an email
from Ad de Leeuw for directing me to the Adobe User Forum. That was good
advice. I went there and searched the Photoshop forum for "raw". I found
a lot of hits but nothing that matched my problem. Then I saw a
reference to the "Camera Raw" forum that supposedly has lots of good info
in it. That forum, for some weird reason, does not show up on the Adobe
list of forums. However, doing a search on "Camera Raw", I found a link
to the forum. Going there, the first thing I found was the FAQ. It had
all the info in it that I needed.

(1) From the Photoshop menu, select plugins and see how many Camera Raw
plugins you have. There should be one and it should show a good "about"
dialog. I had two!!

(2) One plugin was found in the location where I had of course placed it
per the install instructions. A second plugin, with the same name, was
found in another directory in the photoshop directory tree (sorry, I'm
not near the Mac now so I can't get the exact name). I deleted that file
and restarted PS. Suddenly, raw format worked!! But, then I came upon
the second problem. Most of the image controls were gone. I had limited
editing capability.

(3) The FAQ then explained that there must be a Nikon plugin in the PS
directory which you should remove. As I had just installed NikonView, I
knew that was my problem. I found the two files that had been installed
by NikonView (you can use the date/time to find them). I deleted those
two files and EVERYTHING has worked fine ever since.

What a pain. But it was worth it. PS on a G5 with a 23" Cinema HD
monitor is absolutely awesome.

Glad you got your problem solved. You may have missed Bill Hilton's
post, and mine just after it, that outlined the same things you found in
the Adobe forum.

In a word: No.

I use Image Capture to download a smallish number of RAW files, or a
card reader when the card's full.

It might be different with the new iPhoto, but haven't tried it yet.

You're right. I saw your responses after I had already posted mine.
Thanks for spending the time responding. Sometimes just hearing the same
thing from two different people might be of help to someone else.

Thanks for the info. You're a lucky fella (?) - I'm still struggling (?)
with a standard screen G4 iMac.
