I've heard from some, thet Athlon X2 5000+ could be unlock into Phenom X4 FX 5000 with the msi 785gtm-e45, because the socket is Am2. I've got plan to help my friend build his rig with minimal budget, so I kept interesting this trheat in mind. Just wondering, which is best, build Athlon X4 620 with msi 785gm-e65 or athlon x2 5000+ msi 785gtm - e45 when I success unlock it to Phenom X4 fx5000..... Any suggest will apreciate...

The Athlon x2 has only two cores total built onto the processor. You can't unlock cores that don't exist.

The Phenom x2 is a dual core, but it actually has four cores with two locked or turned off. The two locked cores on the Phenom x2 can be unlocked, but they won't always work. The Phenom 2x may be a 2x because one or two of the cores were bad, therefore AMD could still sell the processor as a 2x instead of scrapping it.

Regardless if they unlock 2 extra cores or not on that athlon, the chipset is still and will always be an Athlon series. NO Where does the athlon just magicaly become a phenom. More believable would be that an athlon II x2 becomes an athlon II x4 . Much like the Phenom II x2 can become the Phenom II x4! so what do i say about that.... They are 2 totaly different chipsets made completly different. The athlon is not a phenom and they are not even remotely related, they are physicaly built differently !! thats like taking a turd and putting it in a tootsie roll wrapper and calling it a tootsie roll!!! Its still a turd!

Just because some people claim it to be so does not make it so... when they unlock those 2 extra cores the programs they use like 3d mark are whatever dont know what to lable the quad core so it just defauts as a "phenom" when it is actually an "athlon" thus the misconception of unlocking an athlon to a phenom.

And sorry to tell you the AthlonII series has 4 cores built in and 2 are ulockable in some instances...

"...the Regor with its two logic cores is implemented in all Athlon II X2 models ... To make the Regor core, AMD physically removed two cores from Propus (Quad Core). The resulting die area was so small that AMD had the opportunity to make some improvements while keeping the core die at a very cost efficient size."
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/Athlon_II_X2_240/2.html

Did this processor (x2 5000+) use a Propus w/o cores removed or a Deneb? Were those made for a limited time?

Okay so this athlon to phenom is crap for many reasons.. but here is the number one which noone has brought up yet. Athlon x2 5000+ is a 2.6ghz with ddr2 controller and AM2 socket. It retails about $60, it was also realeased Q4 2005 & Q1 2006. So saying an athlon x2 5000 unlocks to phenom fx.. a processor that does not exist is a total lie. How does AMD make a chip in 2006 and program it to unlock to a phenom series which wasn't even created yet and the fx which still isnt? They don't. That's the truth on the chip.. not my opinion.

You can call it a Phenom II or not. But the fact is that after unlocking to 4 cores & having 6MB L3 cache and OC'd to 3.2GHz, it is the equivalent of a Phenom II X4 955. I would call it a Phenom II.

it may be equivelant but not in oc and the chipset is phisically different.. so in essence it is not a phenom it is an athlonII x4

every amd site i go to says that the athlon is different in the fact that there is only 2-3 physical cores on an athlon (exluding the x4) and has a lower clock rate. All phenoms have 4 cores... but then i ran into this

Why would AMD want to do this? The reason can be found in the manufacturing process. Processor yields are often imperfect. Certain processors in a batch will have deficiencies which prevent them from reaching the maximum potential of the architecture the processor is based on. Rather than discarding these processors, their functionality is limited and they are sold as less expensive products. This is why you'll find some users posting on the internet about how they managed to effectively turn a dual-core Phenom II X2 550 into a Phenom II X4 955 by overclocking and unlocking disabled cores. These cases are rare, however - remember that AMD is selling the products in their stock form for a reason, and that those who manage to overclock and unlock cores without suffering stability issues are simply lucky.

so they may have slaped an athlon label on an phenom but more than likely they would not have and labled it a phenom IIx2 either way there is some shaddy practices going on here with these dual and tripple core processors. cores are disabled because they are defective so they resell as a lesser core processor...

:bounce: Hi Guys, thak's all for the reply.... I'm so satisfied today. Yesterday I actually bougt the athlon x2 5000 for $57 in my country
X25000CPUZ.jpg
. Combined it with MSI 785 GTM-E45 for $78. Keep my hand cross and less hope for God.. And surprise... It's really turn into AMD Phenom FX 5000 Quad core, with 6Mb in L3 Cache
X4CPUz2750.jpg
... I play around this procie a night... And success push it procie to 2,750Ghz with stock Vcore and stock cooler. The temperature is abot 37-45 degree celcius. I'll go further when I buy the better cooler. I use windows 7 ultimate 32bit. The WEI score for the X2 5000 is 5,5. After unlock to Phenom FX 5000 @ 2,750Ghz, the WEI give 7,2point...Cine Bench R10 give score 3.688 CBCPU, and 8967 CBCPU for the FX, almost 150% right? This is fantastic for the $57 chips... FYI the batch procie of mine is BPMW..... Here is some screen shot :

So, it's not lie that Athlon X2 5000 can unlock into Phenom FX X4 5000

Yes, You are right. This athlon x2 is base on 45 nm, with 2,2Ghz. And The old I guess with codename windsor/brisbane are 65nm with 2,6 Ghz..

That's not what you heard. FX processors have not even existed for many years and there was never anything called a FX5000.

What you heard was you can unlock a Phenom 2 550BE to a Phenom 2 x4.

It's a crapshoot, theres a good chance it will unlock, but there's a chance it wont.

If it was me I would just get the Athlon 2 X4 630 for $99 or the X3 440

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103843&cm_re=x3-_-19-103-843-_-Product

Which also MAY unlock to a X4.

It works great. I got one in late 09. it was a duel core but unlocked very easily to a PHENOM FX-5000 QUAD core and it runs very smoothly at 3ghz and its very cool with a crapy little coolmaster. All and all its cheap and reliable

@darkjuggalo2000 Dude, you're killing me.

Athlon II X2 can unlock to a Phenom II X4

Sometimes if a P2 has a maufacturing defect in one of the cores they'll disable the defective core and sell it as that (X4 has a defective core, sell it as an X3)

The same thing goes for the L3 cache, which is the biggest difference between the Phenom and the Athlon (yes, im aware the core isnt exactly the same, but its irrelevant) If the cache is defective, they'll disable the cache and sell it as an Athlon II.
Also at times if they're not meeting demand for a particular chip, they'll just disable cores or cache on chips that they have a surplus of to meet demand.

So yes, an Athlon II can unlock to a Phenom II
And if it does in fact have the L3 cache, it isnt the equivalent of a phenom, it IS a phenom. the athlon cores do not have that built in.
