I saw nothing about an 8GB limit. Did I miss it?

no it was a further educated guess based on multiple memory upgrade places that all agreed on the max 8GB memory ability of the pavilion series 15 notebooks from HP
http://www.memorystock.com/memory/HewlettPackard15r204tx.html
states 8GB
http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/HP-Compaq/pavilion-15-rxxxx-series-%28intel-ddr3%29
states 8GB

but HP pages seems after some digging indicated the following at
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04409502
16GB but seemingly becomes incompatible for windows 32bits systems...

[quote from page]

Memory 1 or 2 customer-accessible/upgradable memory module slots (depending on model)
2 slots: DDR3L-1600MHz Dual Channel Support (Core processors)
1 slot: DDR3-1333MHz Dual Channel Support (DDR3L-1600 downgraded to DDR3-1333)(Bay Trail processors)
1 slot: DDR3-1333MHz Dual Channel Support (DDR3L-1600 downgraded to DDR3-1066)(Bay Trail processors)
Supports dual-channel memory
Supports up to 16 GB of system RAM in the following configurations:
●16384-MB total system memory (8192×2) or (4096×2) (not for 32-bit operating system or Windows 7 Home)
● 12288-MB total system memory (8192×1 + 4096×1) (not for 32-bit operating system or Windows 7 Home)
● 8192-MB total system memory (8192×1) or (4096×2) (not for 32-bit operating system)
● 6144-MB total system memory (4096×1 + 2048×1) (not for 32-bit operating system)
● 4096-MB total system memory (4096×1) or (2048×2) ● 2048-MB total system memory (2048×1)

Well, darn! So does it take 16GB or 8GB? Guess it depends on the OS (64 vs 32 bit)? Now I'm really confused, LOL...

P.S. I had found the link to the service manual as well, but probably misinterpreted it. :(

I had looked up the laptop at crucial under "HP 15 Series", not "Pavilion", because it seems many newer Pavilions aren't referred to as such. I didn't find the 15r204tx model there, but did find the 15r204tu. Crucial said the tu model takes 16GB. Both laptops sold in India, with the only difference being that the tx model comes with Windows 8, and the tu model comes with no OS. My guess is that if the OP either has, or does, upgrade to a 64 bit OS, that 16GB will work, right (which is what you said)?
