Upgrade zten817 4.4.4 to better software

I have been told there is a way without rooting, to upgrade my phone.ZTE N817 4.4.4. I know how to get in developer mode but not what to do.ANY HELP

There is no way to upgrade if there is no upgrade listed in the phone's settings. Anything else would be installing something and not an upgrade. Also, it can't be done without rooting.
