Usb sata transfer

Hi all, hope someone can help. My old Asus laptop running windows 8 died with all my files, pics etc. I did some reseach and bought a usb/ sata transfer cable. When i plug into my new Dell with windows 10 it says 'usb can not be recognised' etc. I then tried again with an old Lenovo laptop and the usb was recognised and files appeared on the screen. My question - does it matter that im trying to transfer files from windows 8 to 10? A tech guy also mentioned downloading.drivers? Im a novice and dont understand. Any advice or help?

What exact cable did you purchase?

The OS (Windows 8 or 10) do not matter, and the drivers are generic, meaning Windows already has drivers built in for mass storage devices like your hard drive. I'm guessing your USB hub on the other computer was malfunctioning (just a guess), causing that error.

What exact cable did you purchase?

I dont know exactly. it reads SATA on 1 side with a blue/ red flashing lights when working. i also has 2 USB cables - 1 blue 1 white..
