Solved! Used laptop vs new netbook

I want a laptop to run linux. What older intel processor would be equal to the newer Atom netbook units? I'm trying to decide whether to buy a Netbook for $300 or a used laptop for the same money.

Depends whether you view small size as good or bad.

I've looked at the 10 inch netbooks and liked the portability then realised that this wasn't enough to make up for a tiny keyboard and a tiny screen.

Over Christmas they had NEW laptops for $298... these were a healthy step above netbooks, but far from top-of-the-line. I'd say go for the used laptop so you have a larger screen and more usable keyboard.
