Using a monitor with laptop (refresh rates)

Hi,

I'm wanting to use a monitor with a MSI GE72MVR 7RG Apache Pro laptop as I need a screen bigger than 17"...

As I haven't had a PC for years and bought a gaming laptop so I can easily take it with me whether I am, so nowadays my knowledge is lacking when it comes to monitors. My oversight meant I bought a monitor (XL2411T) that ouputs to DVI-Sub, DVI-D and HDMI. The GE72MVR 7RG Apache Pro only has HDMI and an mDP.

I've tried researching online whether I can output to the monitor via the mDP at 144hz, however it all seems a bit ambiguous with some saying you can, some saying you definitely can't... I have contacted MSI but they don't have a clue.

I have bought an mDP to DVI-D converter, but it's a passive one.

I can select 60Hz or 120Hz upto 1024x768 and only 60Hz on resolution above that. However if if I use the laptop only, I get 120Hz at all resolutions.

I have a GTX 1070 8GB in my laptop and a XL2411T monitor which supports upto 144Hz - I should be getting better refresh rates. Will an active mDP to DVI-D cable allow me to get 144hz? Or even 120hz upto 1920?

I bought an active mDP to DVI-D dual link adapter (this adapter has the addition of a USB power cable to power it).

I can now get upto 144Hz on resolutions upto 1920x1080.
