I find the hypocrisy of some people absolutely astounding. It seems that only NOW do they decide to crawl from their rocks, and raise the issue of race representation within the entertainment media.
I am disturbed by the growing trend of racist undertones that are cropping up in video games,
Says you.
One of the games that comes to mind is Left 4 Dead 2
You mean, ONE of the FEW straws you could CLUTCH, in order to make sweeping statements..or rather, opinions wrapped up as facts.
several of them who appear to be African-Americans
Quick off the mark, aren't you. According to the 200 census for New Orleans:
. Around 67% were African American
. Around 28% were white
Hence, 2/3 of the population is African American. Add to this the fact that "several" characters actually appears to number 2, with other races representing the rest.
I wonder what Willie Jefferson's views are on representing races in other media formats, such as TV and film. See, for several years now it seems that Hollywood is hell-bent on portraying it's own version of reality - with some races faring better than others; some races are over-represented as evil, whilst others are put on a pedestal or their evilness is passed of as some kind of temporary lapse of reason. In other words, played down.
But forget that..we have a catalyst here, it seems, allowing certain people to jump on the bandwagon and say the fashionable thing - not the right thing - the fashionable thing. Such idiocy extends to corporate policy, where again, certain groups are over-represented "in case" anyone is offended, and it basically makes me sick. I've witnessed it personally, where people who are incompetent get the position not because they're cut out to do the job, but because they are a demographic that MUST be employed in that position at ALL costs. You then come home to see the same kind of bile that this guy's spewing..be it news, entertainment or education.
By the way Willie, I don't know if you can read this. But I have several African American friends who just cannot wait to get their hands on that game. Seems they aren't the one's making an issue out of it. They have the intellect to realise that this is fiction, that the black people in the game are just as much prone to turning into zombies as the anyone else. I didn't see Willie complaing about most of the people in Res 4 being white - there's countless more examples but he might be be able to get the same kind of media reaction he's getting here, perhaps..
