Verizon returning customer

My 2 year commitment to Verizon Wireless is up, and I'm thinking about
straying.

VZW reception at my house has never been great (1 or 2 bars on my phone
almost all the time), but other companys' reception used to be worse.
It's been a few years since I looked, and maybe the other networks are
better now. So I'm thinking about closing my VZW account and trying some
of the other cell providers in my area.

How will VZW treat me if I decide to come back after a few weeks? Here
are some of the possibilities:

* I will get charged a return customer fee.
* I lose my 2-year equipment upgrade, and I'm stuck with my old phone.
* VZW cuts me a phone/plan deal as if I were a new customer.
* Something else.

Does anyone know what VZW's policy towards a 2-week strayed customer is?
I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area, if that makes a difference.

Thanks.

Why don't you go ahead and try out the other cellular services first to see
how they perform for you and if they are good then drop VZW. The easiest
thing would be to borrow a friend's phone that they use with another service
and see how it works in your area. If you like it go to their service and
if it doesn't then stay with VZW. I'm about to go to VZW myself but, I'll
probably go ahead and sign up with VZW before I cancel service with
Cingular. Then I won't be without a phone and if I don't like VZW for some
reason then I'll cancel service during the trial period.

Why cancel Verizon, keep it until you see if your happy with your new
company or not.

Simple solution to your at home reception. Get an external cell antenna.

Well, that's the follow-up plan. The problem is that I'd rather test
the reception at my house with the phone I want rather than whatever
phones my friends happen to own.

I can get the right phone/service combination and cancel during the
trial period if things don't work out. However, I won't want to
transfer my current VZW phone number to the trial service. Will I be
able to transfer my VZW number *after* the trial phone has been activated?
The Sprint sales rep I spoke to said no, and there I am stuck again.

Will you be transfering your Cingular number to VZW? How will you make
that work with the trial period?

In a word, cell number portability. I'd like to keep the same phone
number for my new service, and the Sprint sales rep I spoke to says
I will not be able to change the number on the trial phone after I've
activated it.

The long skinny external antennas are a hassle, and the stick-on kinds
don't seem to work. Life's a b*tch.

Is there any liability for your trial at Sprint? If you trial their service
and
phone and decide to cancel within the trial period is there any cost to you
over and above actual minutes used? If you trial and cancel does that lock
you out of sprint for some time?

If not, you trial it, cancel it, and then if you want to get Sprint service
you start over again.

Right. That's probably what I'll have to do, sign on with Sprint|ATT|whomever
on a trial first, then cancel and rejoin with a VZW transfer number. *Except*
this will land me in the same situation I might have with VZW in the first
place, namely how VZW (or whomever) will treat me if I cancel my service
and then rejoin soon after.

Ironic, isn't it?

Why not try a friend's phone from another company? Or keep your Verizon
account and start a new one with a new company (keep track of how long
you can keep the phone before cancelling). If you like the new company
better then disconnect Verizon.

Airtime used. And the $36 activation fee is non-refundable. You can cancel
without ETF within 14 days but you will be liable for those two items.

Then get Carrier X, use their trial period, and don't drop Verizon. At the end
of the trial period, you can port over. Worked for me with Sprint... got my
Sprint phone a month before my Verizon contract ended, because I was tired of
not being able to make calls in certain parts of town, and ported my Verizon
number to Sprint as soon as my Verizon contract was up.

You will be liable for airtime you use on your new phone during the trial
period and may be liable for a couple other charges; this varies depending on
which carrier's trial period you use.

I just did what you want. My cingular service was great *except* in my
house. I had the problem with TDMA phones and GSM. My cousin had Verizon
and it always worked in my house. I took the 15 day deal with Verizon
with an assigned number and it worked well in my house. I then called
Verizon and had them port my cingular number to my Verizon phone. It
worked the next morning!

Verizon will treat you like you've never been a customer with them at all.
Their attitude towards customer's is horrible and they really could care
less if you stay or go. You will lose everything that's attached to the time
you've spent with them and don't ever bother calling them to get it
back....this is how this company survives; on high fees and misc charges.

With the exception of NE2 time, just what would that be?

Have I been accumulating "VZW bucks" that I can redeem
for a hat or something and didn't know it?

Depends on where you are. I swore by Verizon in Northeast Ohio. Here in the
Victor Valley area of SoCal, I mostly swore at them. ;)

What a load of bullshit.

VZW is no worse than any cell carrier in customer service, and has the best
overall coverage of any of them. I know, I've used most all of them.

I have dealt with Cingular and other carriers...they're much more happy and
pleased to give you service then Verizon ever will be. I'm sorry...Cingular
actually went out of their way for an account problem I had last year when I
was fortunate enough to use their service on a real phone. Don't forget,
this is a HIGHLY opinionated perception...so we could go back and forth all
day about this...so I'm stopping about it now.

Happy New Year!

It's not going to be too much different. While there will be some
differences, it's not like Model B works *everywehre* and Model X works
*almost nowhere*. If it were like that, Verizon would have different
plans and coverage maps for each phone.

Quick:

You have been accumulating VZW points. You can redeem into a new
contract when you change your rate plan.

Heh! I ran right out and did that. Turns out that I have been paying
the exact same for a 1500 family share as the current 2000
family share costs. Then they threw in 100 bonus minutes for
my "VZW bucks". How about that? The new contract runs to
1/06/06.
