Very tricky audio question

Right so here it is

My left earphone is much louder.
I have a pair of relitively new Sennheiser HD429's.
First I checked the headphones but they sound fine off my phone.
So I checked the port with my apple headphones, no problem.
I am on my pc (sorry if wrong thread) and have checked all audio settings. I have also tested both pairs of headphones on the front and rear aux ports. Same result. Apple are fine but the 429's much louder on the left.

I can get it to work evenly by having the jack halfway in but lose a lot of volume.

The only thing I can see that is could be is the jack. Looking at my apple headphones there are 4 sections where as only 3 on the others. See pic, link/pic if it works below.

Could it be something to do with this?

It sounds like (haha) that could be the problem. Because it works with the jack half out, that would explain it. Did this just start happening, or is this the first time you have used these headphones on this computer?

Its odd, it happened before and I remember getting it to work properly. I tried resetting stuff to default as that's what I thought I did before but it hasn't worked.
If it is the jack how does that work?

Maybe get a female to male extender cable. Plug the headphones into that, then that into the computer.

Well if your computer is an apple, the white, or black, rings separate the headphone connections. Left, right, the mic, and the control switch. Depending on the placement of the Senns rings, one connection could overlap the other. Even if it is not an Apple, this could still happen. There are metal connectors that touch each one of those rings.

I thought that too. But I'm afraid it gets EVEN MORE CONFUSING.
I had a splitter and put that in the computer. The splitter has the same jack as the Senn's, 3 parts. The headphones were still quiet on the right so I thought that was it, it must be an overlap or something. Then I stuck my Apple headphones in the splitter. They work!
Really don't understand.
That only leaves a problem with the headphones but they work on my other devices. Could it be the signal the computer is sending out?
Its an oldish Dell Dimension 9150. Maybe its age?
