video editing with laptop

I was the "penny-pinching student" from a while back. I've finally settled
on an Averatec with the following specs:
Athlon XP-M 2200
512 MB RAM
80GB HDD
shared video RAM
3 x USB 2 ports
DVD+/-RW

At the time, I didn't need super graphics capability. But with the DVD
writer, several of my family members want me to to transfer home movies from
VHS to DVD. Will this configuration be able to handle very light video
editing? By light, I mean ust transfer, no special effects or anything like
that.

FWIW, my experience with Averatec is that they make serviceable laptops,
but the 4200rpm drives - if the 80G is one - are noticeably slow. If
there is a 5400rpm or 7200rpm drive at a reasonable upgrade price, I
would upgrade.

A laptop is not an ideal video editing platform, but it's possible. I
did some heavy video editing on a system with a P4 1.6GHz and 512 megs
of RAM (RAM really isn't the issue, it's CPU and possibly hard drive).
Be warned, encoding of unencoded AVI to MPEG can take a LONG time (on
the 1.6 GHz system, it was taking 8 to 14 hours to create a single DVD).

Oh dear, how long was the DVD?? 2 hours?
