RAM is key.
i5/i7 are both supported on XP

I would suggest quad core or higher with a good amount of RAM.

I use VirtualMachine on my desktop and use two hexa cores with 24GB ram

I'd have to agree....RAM is a huge factor, but having enough cores to run the multiple VMs is a big deal too. Make sure it supports x64 virtualization if you plan on virtualizing 64 bit OSs.

Since we are talking about the requirements to run on a machine, what about the Video Card? I'm building a laptop with i7, 8GB of RAM and it has Intel HD Graphics 3000. Would the built in graphics card do the work? if not please let me know.

I think you'd have to check the hardware compatibility list, or even the VMware whitebox site. I'd have to assume a generic driver would work, but I have never tried the new i7/3000 iGPU.
