Wait for VR Convergence?

I am starting to think that it would be best to wait until there is some kind of uniformity or cross play with VR systems. It seems, to me ayways, that we are seeing the same type of platform battle we saw with blu-ray and hd-dvd. and the best bet is to wait until the 'winner' is apparent then buy that system. it seems like i see games made specifically for certain VR's.

is that a correct conclusion to draw or no?

I have a Vive and there seems to be a ton of content, although alot of it is short.

Now that I have it, I think of it as less of a gaming device, and more of an experience device.

I don't know that there will ever be games on it like you would see on your PC, but I could be wrong.

Not sure if such a convergence will occur.

At this point, that would be like.. "I am going to wait for this console war to end before I purchase a video-game system. I'm really thinking the Sega Genesis is going to win, but I want to hold off."

Here is what I would recommend...
- Log into Steam.
- Look at the VR Offerings.

Now, are there enough things that excite you that you want to try?
- If yes = BUY!
- If No = wait!

(why not oculus? You will pay more to get the equivilant experience at the HTC.)

----------------------------------------------------------------------

If you aren't reaching for your VISA by that time, maybe you really aren't into VR? That is OK. Go back to your 2-d world... you monster! :)

But mind you, even if you buy a VR system, the VR consumer world is still only 8 months old now. There are going to be LOTS of changes and improvements. Right now every HTC Vive user is drooling over the news of the Wireless tech that is coming out. Just understand that the VR platform is not a thing you buy and is guaranteed to have the lifespan of that Pentium 2 PC you have in the basement. The tech is moving fast. Part of the excitement of VR is being part of that dynamic tech world, and being first to try new games / experiences and see where the technology is going.

It is sorta like being a person with a 3-d printer. :)

Anyways.. hope this helps.

thats what i am wondering. if a winner will crowned or if it will be like consoles and they all mostly remain. thats why i haven't pulled the trigger yet on it, its all changing too fast. and the cost. i can buy a HELLUVA gun for $1200 and it could actually do more than just be fun. i was thinking i would probably wait about another year before i start looking seriously at VR. let everyone else work the kinks out first. i'll take the polished version.

But if everyone thinks like you, no one will buy VR and the platform will die.

In my 34 years on this Earth, what you are describing happened to me only one time.

You are speaking to an unproud owner of a Sega 32x.

I think you are safe with a Vive, Occulous or PS. The product is great, especially with room scale, and porn has already adopted it, so I doubt its going anywhere.

Gosh, Larsv8... there is pron in VR? I'm sure no VR user knows what you are talking about! :)
*lol*

So, what you are saying is VR is like the VCR of the 80's. Everybody said it was to watch family movies, but that was a dirty lie.

Honestly! I just got it for Tilt Brush!!!
(and if you are going just for that, I suspect you are better off getting a Gear VR or any google-cardboard style device, as you don't need roomscape for THAT!)

And in fairness, the 32x sega was an add-on accessory! It sucked out of the box, and didn't just age out.

VR is more like a Sega Gamegear.
It is possible that it is before it's time.. but it is awesome, and all your friends are jealous that you have one. :)

Honestly if you can afford a Vive, I would do it.

Having people over and watching them experience it for the first time is really really fun.

I play a lot of games on PC and I dont think I ever had an ear to ear grin like I did with the first week of the Vive. It so immersive your body reacts, adrenaline, heart beat like nothing else.

(final comment for now)

The HTC vive is pretty damn polished! The next versions will go to enhance and improve the system beyond what it is.
- Cable improvements.
- Wireless capabilities
- Improved screen resolution
- Reduced weight

The rest comes down to software. Again we are 8months in, and developers are still in their infancy of VR development. it will be interesting to see what comes out for the playstation VR and when Xbox releases Scorpio.. but those are not PC platform, and Scorpio is a ways away.

I bought the Dk2, loved it! The got the HTC Vive and sold the Dk2 immediately. No regrets! :)

I was disappointed with my Oculus Rift. I could not wear my audio-technica AD700X with it and it just felt like a gimmick. I think the fact I knew I was using key/mouse or even a controller killed teh experience. Only games that felt good were racing games, and that was because I had force feedback wheel and peddles.
