Want to surprise my boyfriend with a DSLR but need help picking one

Hello. My boyfriend reads this site everyday so I thought I'd give it a shot.

I want to get him a DSLR Camera because I know he really wants to start photography. I've read a couple online guides but I honestly have no experience in this field...

The one I'm looking at right now is the Nikon D3300 Digital DSLR, is that any good?

Like if you know a better one, then please recommend it (my budget for the camera itself is £300-450) because I want to get a memory card and bad as well.

Why? A camera is a very personal choice. Does he prefer Canon over Nikon? What features/size/use? What equipment does he already have?
