wd externel hard disk not detected in Acer aspire 5920G

My laptop Acer Aspire 5920G cannot detect my Western Digital external hard disk 1TD. What should I do?

Does it show inside "Disk Management"? If so, you may need to either initialize, or assign a drive letter (right click it inside Disk Mgmt).

You may be prompted to format (can't remember) and, if so, don't do that if you can afford to lose files on the external HDD.
