Weird laptop adapter problem (?)

I’m trying to fix a laptop that won’t charge the battery.

I’ve got an adapter with at small green LED and it lights up when I plug it in… Indicating that the adapter is working…
BUT the minute I plug it into the laptop the LED turns off and the computer isn’t charging…

Anyone got an idea why this is happening? Is it the adapter? The battery? The AC socket in the laptop?

Any help will be appreciated!

Thanks for the reply.... I certainly wouldn't have thought the problem could be with the CMOS battery. It would surprise me if it was, cos it's a relatively old laptop. It's definitely worth a try!

If not, I'll tryout a new adapter and a battery after that.
