I use my phones internet (droid 4) for just about everthing and my search history is tied to my gmail account. About a month ago I was looking up animal shelters in my area and visited a site for one in my area. Well last week I went into my phones history to find the shelter and found "adult" websites in my history as well as some mobile hookup site and immedatly after that was an attempt to get into my history. I have never accessed these sites and the only other person with access to my phone is my son, so naturally I accused him of going onto these sites. He claims he did not do it and of course I really didnt believe him, but yesterday while on my desktop I logged into my gmail account and these sites were not in my history...?? they still remain on my phone though. So now i'm wondering if my son was actually telling me the truth? did someone hack my phone/gmail or was he just smart enough to delete the google history but not my phones history?
fyi...this was the only instance of stuff being on my phone that I did not actually search for.

The way Google works is that it will sync information across all devices, including internet history, unless you opt out.

It's pretty likely that you've remained signed in on the desktop, or another computer in the house, and Chrome has synced the browsing history across the devices. He's most likely cleared it from the computer, but it's just remained on your phone.

People don't hack your PC/phone to watch dodgy videos unfortunately mate, it's your son.

Thanks for your honest reply. My concern, however, is that I do not use my google account for anything but my phone. The first time I had ever logged onto the google account on anything other than my phone was when I logged in on my desktop to check the history against my phone history.

I know most of you laugh, but my son is only 12 so its a bit concerning to me.

I've never actually turned on my mobile hotspot, but when I am at work or school it asks me if I would like to log into an available wi-fi network and I always answer no. So I'm not sure if that turns on my mobile hotspot or not since I'm not actually logged onto a wifi and yet I'm still using the internet on my phone.

You can relax on that one - turning on the Portable Hotspot needs a discrete and separate tick. That said, anyone determined to hack a colleague could have done so whilst connected to a network, however well secured. I'm afraid it's not beyond the nonce of the average thirteen year old with a basic knowledge of Linux.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean and my son is not very computer savvy. He has no knowledge of Linux.

I do wonder though, if I refuse to sign into the wifi, say when I am at school. Is it possible that I could pick up one of my classmates web searches since I'm not actually signed into a network? And when you do refuse to use the local available wifi, what are you using when using the internet?

I wasn't accusing your son of being the cause, merely commenting that young folks learn fast and can catch us oldies out.

I wouldn't want you to live in fear of hacking to the point where you don't make the most of your equipment and everything it offers you. It's quite rare after all and all you've suffered so far is a few searches you wouldn't have made yourself. Ask around among your colleagues - maybe they've had similar experiences and can put your mind at rest.
