I am looking to convert my asus x550l's optical drive into a ssd with the adapter. I am looking to use the ssd as a boot drive, and the 1tb hdd I have for storage. What is a proper amount of storage should I look for in an ssd? 30 Gb? 60 Gb? 128 Gb?

I am just using it for school. Just pdf's and word docs and powerpoints. I wont be installing games on it. The programs I have are not big, just stuff like vlc player, google chrome, etc

If you can get away with 128GB, you can simply swap the 1TB drive once you cloned it.
Make sure you make a backup elsewhere of your important files just in case.
If you have a recovery disc from your laptop, you should be able to use it to do a clean install of the OS on the SSD.

60 will cover OS and maybe a few programs like Office, so its the bare minimum size you should even consider. I'd recommend the 128 as you never know how much stuff you will install. Giving yourself some headroom is always best.
