I'm hoping with the continued success of android that Apple will be forced to step up their game both in hardware and software. However, for that to happen (in the US) more people will have to see the value of Android. IMO, with Android 4.1 Android has arrived. IME it's now no longer choppy. Now, with it happily copulating with high performance devices like the GS3 and Note II the user is presented with a combination that is as smooth to use (or smoother) than the latest iOS devices. ...and customizable (for those that value that).

I want to see Apple innovate. I want to see them produce another high-quality, durable handset and correct iOS to contain at least some of Android's customability. Samsung is playing for keeps and despite Apple's attempts the Kraken of Samsung is succeeding wonderfully.

[citation][nom]azetec[/nom]You should all do a reality check and see that companies like Samsung, HTC, LG, Sony, Nokia and Motorola are in telecommunication business and some of them producing mobile phones since 1981. From 1981 till 2007 all these companies have produced hundreds of mobile phones models and have sold billions of units worldwide before Apple was ever thinking of producing a mobile phone in 2007.In contrast Apple was not a telecommunication company like the others and had zero history or research & development put in the field of developing mobile phones. So in 2007 Apple just copied all the technology they could have found in all other mobile phones and smart devices, and with all that stolen knowledge and technology they have created the iPhone.Obviously they couldn't have been innovative in any way with their first mobile phone since all the technology was stolen from others, Apple's iPhone was nothing but a copycat. If you wanna see what models of mobile phones, smartphones or smart devices did Apple just copied with their iPhone just check the following list of models that were produced way before the year 2007 when the first iPhone was released:- remember the Compaq iPaq models released since year 2000 upwards- then the old HP iPaq models released since year 2004 upwards, running on Windows Mobile featuring touchscreen displays with hand write recognition models: HP iPAQ h6320, HP iPAQ h6325, HP iPAQ rw6818, HP iPAQ rw6815, HP iPAQ rw6828 - Motorola models released since year 2004: Motorola A1000, Motorola A1010, Motorola ROKR E6, all smartphones with big touchscreen displays - many HTC models based on Windows Mobile started from year 2002 upwards, including the first Windows Mobile phone released to marked, here are some model examples since year 2006: HTC P3300, HTC TyTN, HTC P3600 they are all smartphones with big touchscreen displays and hand write recognition- in 2004 Samsung released a Windows Mobile phone model Samsung i700, again a smartphone with big touchscreen display- Nokia Comunicator series released since 1998 models: Nokia 9000 Communicator, Nokia 9210i Communicator, Nokia 7710 touchscreen display, Nokia N95 they are all smartphones with big displays - model from year 2006: LG KE850 Prada again with big touchscreen display- model from year 2006: Philips S900For the ignorants just check the above mentioned models to see how much iPhone resembles them in look and functionality.[/citation]

You somehow forgot to mention the Apple Newton (circa 1993), which predated all of these that Apple supposedly copied. Yes it wasnt a smartphone, but it did show the way that things where going to go in the future...

Aztec, there's not enough green thumbs at a gardener's convention to show my appreciation for your solid post.

Saying Apple didn't innovate is plane obfuscation of the facts.

It's hilarious to say Google and RIM did all the innovating and Apple did none...

Really, are you a six year old?

They all used each others ideas but for some reason Android people consistently hammer that Apple didn't innovate anything even when they did quite a bit, as a matter of fact Most of these companies innovated and built on each other. Google had to have used some of Apple's ideas - Just like Apple used Nokia's before it.

There are no Apple people saying Apple created a phone out thin air - It's only angry Android people who keep trying to hammer it so it becomes true.

You give credit where it's due and your argument holds otherwise ya'll sound like a bunch of 6 year old whiney babies.

We are talking about the industry before and after the 2007 iPhone introduction, not before and after all the models listed by some readers here. The point is not who invented what, but who did it right enough to produce a reference for the entire industry. The devil is in the details.

[citation][nom]molo9000[/nom]The LG Prada looks like the iPhone, but it had horrible software that didn't really utilize the touchscreen properly. It was basically a dumb phone with a touchscreen and an insane price tag.People can argue all they want, but there simply were no multitouch smartphones before the iPhone.[/citation]

Insane price tag? Try the iPhone for an an insane price tag!

[citation][nom]frank_drebin[/nom]umm, these may be ok WinMo phones but they look nothing like iPhone at all. Now most of phones on the market (not only HTC) do resemble an iPhone ....[/citation]
head buried in the sand... you sound just like a creationist in the face of an mountain of evidence for evolution.

calling people six year olds = FAIL
try again

[citation][nom]wind82[/nom]Apple did not innovate anything with the iphone .The smart phone very much would have existed as it is today because iphone is no more then an apple version of the windows phone. The windows phone is no more then a pocket pc with a cellular modem stuffed inside. The pocket pc platform started development in 1995 with windows ce . Pocket pc devices were released around the time of the ill fated palm pilot . please research things before you post stupid misleading comments . The only thing apple innovates is the amount of money they pocket .[/citation]
Pocket PC devices were not "smartphones". They were hand held miniature PC's that could also be used as a phone. Whether Apple made the first "smartphone" not is irrelevant. Apple made the first "smartphone" that people actually wanted to use. So are we to believe that a company who you say didn't know a thing about smartphones was able to put out a better phone than all those companies who had been in that business for years and years? Were all those companies that stupid. If Apple stole their ideas why didn't they sue? Maybe Apple just did a lot of research and development over a number of years and brought the right product to the market at the right time. Ipod, Iphone, Ipad. I don't own any Apple products, but I don't hate their ingenuity of putting out a product for the right market at the right time!

Why do people care so much about how an iphone looks like an android phone and vice versa, and whether current smartphones would be what they are today without the iphone? Do you people as consumers really want only ONE device available? That's how the technology industry survives and perpetuates--from building on what others have done, either literally/directly, or by looking at the competition, mimicking it and adding new functionality. That's what gives us the great competition between companies, and as consumers gives us the choices we want.

Besides, so maybe the "modern" smartphone industry wouldn't be where it is today without the iphone; okay, so what? Apple may not be the company they are today without fortuitous access to a nifty GUI that Xerox PARC was working on when Apple was developing the Macintosh.

I dislike Apple as a company, I don't enjoy using their products, and I think Steve Jobs was not an example of a good person. But I also don't care if people like the company and their products; there is no one product that is universally acceptable to anyone, and I'm so grateful that there's an alternative in the smartphone industry to the iphone. That neat drag-down notification tray that showed up in iOS5? Looks a whole heck of a lot like the notification tray that has been present in Android for quite a while. And that's how advancements in the industry are made that give the consumers the choices they want.

God, I really love the look of this phone... reminds me of my Samsung blackjack that I had for 6 years up until last November... I really miss all of my buttons and the ease of use... and most importantly I miss not having to use a touchscreen. I really wish we had more options for designs of phones... getting really sick of this slab of plastic with a giant screen design everywhere. Just want a phone with a few apps a full non-slide out keyboard, and some actual buttons to answer/end calls... is that so much to ask?
