What Anti Virus Software

I'm looking for a good anti virus software to go with for a new build and not sure what are the best options out there. I would of course prefer not to have to pay for a good one so are there any good options out there that you do not have to pay for?

Aside from the free ones, and if I did have to pay for one, what anti virus should I use and what is going to be the best for either free or paid?

Avast, Avira there is a whole host of free A/V services that are really good.
