Would help if you listed the connections your DVD player has if you can't just hook it up or at least the brand and model of it.

If the DVD doesn't have HDMI then it would most likely have analog video (component or composite) plus audio outputs.
If the TV doesn't have the matching input then you will need an active AV to HDMI converter. A passive cable won't work.
It might be worth getting a new disc player with HDMI. Not a whole bunch of money.
