What kind of y adapter should I be looking for this predicament?

I have a headset that has two headphone jacks that are dedicated to audio and microphone that are both 3.5mm, my macbook has only has one place to insert jacks, what device should I use to merge the two inputs? Is it female to male or male to female?

That is no good mate , that's just a splitter to run 2 speakers from 1 output.

You need a mic/speaker splitter - that will come with 4 distinctive rings on the 3.5mm plug (not the 3 shown on the one you listed)
