What's with 'Expandable upto 16GB' ?

Many laptops come with 4GB RAM and gives the option to expand it upto 16GB. What does this actually mean? Does this mean I can add another 16GB with the inbuilt 4GB to make it 20GB or I can only add 12GB to make it 16GB in total ?

You can have only 16GB max. Depend on the configuration to go for a 16 GB, you might need to swap your 4GB to an 8GB and add another 8GB to the other slot.

Well, it depends on the motherboard's capacity of RAM, as well as what type of ram(DDR2,DDR3, Etc). You can buy RAM sticks at a store.
