When fast forwarding...

on a 5040, is there a way to show how far into the program you are? I'm
currently watching the Giro d'Italia, and I can't watch the entire show (2
hours), so I fast forward through some spots. However, I can never figure
out how close to the end I am, so I have to stop, hit "display" and then
continue. Also, is there a way to make the display tell you the time
remaining (instead of the time elapsed)?

Thanks!

I never had a need to stop it to use display. Display should work in
all modes (just now when you're in a menu).

Not that I know of, but that's easily determined by comparing the time
elapsed to the length of the recording (shown at the beginning of the
next line down).

I didn't know that, thanks.

Easy for someone who can subtract! As an engineer, we invented
calculators so we'd have something to do that kind of stuff. Similarly,
I'd much rather know how many minutes are left than subtracting 21 minutes
from one hour and 40 minutes. Who cares about how many minutes have
elapsed? (And I'm not saying that subtraction is bad -- it's just my mind
doesn't think that way. I bought a $400 programmable remote so that I
wouldn't have to remember that cable is connected to input 3 of my TV and
to input 4 of my receiver. I'm terrible at detail.)

I don't seem to be doing that subtraction anymore. I can see that 21
minutes or an hour show have elapsed and already know about how much
has elapsed. For remembering the point (such as for returning to it
later), time elapsed is just as useful as time remaining.

Good point! (Although I guess one could do this by time remaining, too,
but it would be backwards from the way most people think.) I think what
I'd want is for this to be configurable, but perhaps then we'd be headed
down the Microsoft trail -- add more functionality but forget about fixing
bugs or making the software actually work.

Most people work from the beginning, not the end. If i fall asleep
watching something, I'll hit 20 jump to restart a show 20 minutes in if
I estimate that's when I drifted off.

If you put both the time elapsed and the time remaining on there, it'd
solve all my problems.

I think using "elapsed" is more obvious, but would get used to the
other if that's what Replay used.
