Usually you create a bootable 'Rescue Disk' using your laptop when you first receive it.

If you're having a problem with your laptop's hard disk?

You can download and burn a whole OS to a CD (or USB thumb drive) and boot that.
Ubuntu Desktop allows you to run the whole OS from the CD without needing a HDD. Use the Show Me How buttons for more information.
