Philip,

Thanks for your reply. Obviously, the designer of the Media Player has a
major omission of so important button on its skin.

They don't want you to stop. Just keep going.

Also, if you read the help file for the media player it tells you how to
assign functions to the hardware buttons of the pocketpc. One of the buttons
can have the 'stop' function assigned to it.

A tip I picked up from somewhere is to assign the function "toggle screen"
to a hardware button, then you can turn off the screen while listening to
music and conserve battery power.

Philip,

Thanks for your further advice.

The toggle screen is the default setting of hardware button same on my uint
as the previous version. I am still not convinced that they intended to
omit Stop button. On the pc version, it does have Stop button. Can I
change to a skin with Stop button?

Actually, Ray, the Stop button was not really omitted. Media Player 10
brought many new changes to the design of skins, and one of those was a
new Play/Pause/Stop command. If I'm not mistaken, the default skin makes
use of this particular command, which is why initially, you see it as a
Play/Pause button, but under certain scenarios, it can also act as a
Stop button. But certainly, you can change to a skin with a Stop button.
It will work fine since Media Player 10 still recognises the Stop command.

Darius,

It sounds interesting. Could you please advise how to configure it to
Play/Pause/Stop command. Currently on my pda phone is Play/Pause only.
Regarding alternative skins, I personally don't like the default skin for
playing MP3 songs. Can I have other choices from Microsoft?

There is a large empty screen on both pc and ppc - to me it is a bad design
but I believe Microsoft intends to do so for certain political reasons. I
do not believe the designer in Microsoft is the worst one among all other
MP3 player applications.

This large empty space in the centre is used to play video.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/ppc/skins.aspx

And look at the audio only skins (they don't have the "blank" area used to
play video).

Personally I like the old skin from 8.5 where the video area is play/pause
so it's easy to pause when I need to hear some talk to me.

By default, it is set to Play/Pause/Stop. It's a command embedded into
the skin used in Media Player. It cannot be changed unless you edit the
skin yourself. If I recall correctly, the Stop command only appears when
you stream media, not during local playback. Secondly, if you wanted to
set your own Stop button, you would need to create your own
corresponding graphic files so that a Stop button is seen on the screen
(when appropriate). In short, it's a messy process unless you have no
problems editing/creating skins - you'll have to know which code to
punch in, etc.

I've created two skins before, although I don't think they are
compatible with Media Player 10, but it's worth a shot nonetheless:

See if those work.

It's also for Album Art - a new feature in Media Player 10.

Darius,

Could you please disclose the secret how to use the Play button to activate
Play/Pause/Stop. I am a stupid guy not to use it in your described
features.

The skins given are for earlier versions. Of course, I know the stop button
on the previous version but not on the version 10 that is installed on my
new pda phone running Windows Mobile 2003 SE so I discover Microsoft omits
the Stop button. If they have an advanced design, I believe they should
explain it otherwise they will have lots of such complaints - only the
designer knows where the stop button but not the users.

Amirov,

Thanks for your view of designer but my view is from point of users. Why I
need such large empty space for playing MP3 song? They can use it to show
lots of useful things, i.e., properties - now I need to tab menu and
properties - poor productivity. The designer should communicate with the
users, not just live in their world.

Actually, the "empty" space is used when playing MP3s if album art is
embedded in the file (as I previously mentioned) - but yes, I suppose it
could be used for "other" purposes. :)

I don't think the meaning of my previous post got across too well. :)
I'll clarify it a little further.

The Play button doesn't "secretly activate" Play/Pause/Stop as you
mentioned. When the media is not playing, you'll notice that particular
button serves the purpose of Play. When the media is playing, it serves
the purpose of Pause. But in actuality, the Pause function sort of
"stops" the media from playing, but it doesn't make it go back to the
beginning as in previous versions of Media Player (so it's not really a
true Stop command). However, the true Stop command will usually appear
when you are playing live broadcasts and the Pause function is not
available. So in other words, you'll rarely see it. So although the
button serves three purposes, you can't tweak it to do what you want,
when you want to. It has to conform to the pre-written code by which
Media Player 10 functions. When you create skins, you have a single
PlayPauseStop command being used to direct the button to function
according to how Media Player 10 intended it to. The only way to have a
*true* Stop command is to create a separate Stop button, but then you
would need to edit the graphic files to create a separate visual button
to do this - which is messy if you're not a skin creator. And even
still, it is advised to stick to the typical PlayPauseStop command when
creating skins for Media Player 10, purely for optimisation purposes.
Hope that helped clarify things. Feel free to ask if you have further
questions. :)

Darius,

Many thanks for your clarification. Now I understand your meaning of
Play/Pause/Stop Button.

After verification, I found that on playing back MP3 songs, the Play button
to activate Playback and Pause - in your explanation, Pause is same as stop
except the playback progress bar does not return to zero. We have to change
our behaviour to interpret the Pause button as the Stop button.

On hearing radio station via internet, you are quite right that tabbing the
Play button once to play the broadcast and tab it again it turns to square
symbol and stop to play broadcast.

And more importantly - at least for newbies - Pause doesn't release the file
like Stop does on the PC version. Combine this with the nonexiting behavior
of the X button and you get lots of I can't delete/update/rename this mp3
file issues.

The skin file format didn't change for WM10 on PPC, so you should be
able to drop in a current skin and have it just work. Is this not your
experience ?
