Which is better Coaxial or Optical

I have a Sony receiver that has both an optical and coaxial input for digital sound. My tv has both ports on the back as well for output. I am just curious which will deliver better sound quality. I know the best is HDMI but the Sony receiver does not have that input.

In general the coaxial digital input is preferred.

the biggest issue i have with optical cables is they get damaged easily. I cant tell the difference between the cables in terms of sound quality, its a digital signal so it shouldnt be any different.....
