Why can I install Linux but not Windows?

I recently built a PC by myself for the first time. I have been unable to install either windows 7 or 8, with them both giving me the error message "this computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk", but I managed to install Linux MInt 17.1 with no problems at all. What's going on, and how do I install Windows?
