Why does my soundbar only work with my dvr,and not directly through my tv?

i HAVE A NEW RCA SOUNDBAR-SUPPOSEDLY SIMPLE SET UP- that only seems to work if it is connected to the audio output of the vcr.There is absolutely no sound coming from he tv through the soundbar connected to the tv.

What connection are you using to connect the soundbar to the TV?
