Why doesn't the LG home theater system have and opt cable

I've just bought a lg home cinema system and I can't get the sound to work for my Hitachi smart tv. It only works on the dvd player

sounds like you likely purchased a HTIB (home theater in a box). many of those do not like playing nice with external sources of audio. some do accept hdmi or optical input though - as wolf stated we would need to know the model number to tell you anything about it. listing your tv model number would also help.
