Why isn't my brand new Digital to Analog Audio Adapter not working with my new Samsung TV?

I recently purchased a new 48" Samsung Series 5/5000 LCD TV and a new Insignia stereo receiver from Best Buy and discovered the TV did not have an audio out aux option so I had to purchase a optical digital cable but my new stereo receiver DOES NOT have the optical option so I purchased a new Digital to Analog Audio converter and followed all the steps and for some reason I am not getting any sound whatsoever. What could I be doing wrong?

Many DACs are for 2 channel music use only. If the DAC you purchased is not compatible with a 5.1 channel output then you have to change the audio out of the TV in the TV audio menu or get a DAC like this one
