Wait...I thought that people used MacBooks forever and never reached an end of life. (I'm being sarcastic). MacBooks are no different than any other Windows PC. They fail and don't always last as long as people say. Since your wife uses it mainly to check email and for online purchases, I would look into Chromebooks. I work in IT, so I have a lot of laptops lying around that I experiment with and use. I have some Windows laptops and have converted a couple into Linux laptops. Years ago, I had a few Chromebooks that I didn't do much with because I was working with our Ubuntu Linux servers a lot, so I used those laptops. I've recently revisited Chromebooks and just purchased a Lenovo Chromebook Duet Gen 9, which is an amazing and pretty fast 11-inch laptop. I think it only ran me about $300, and I use it for email and online shopping, and it's perfect. It boots up in about 2-3 seconds. It moves very quickly from page to page. It's perfect. Just make sure that whatever Chromebook you get, you go with the 8 GB RAM model.
