[citation][nom]tokenz[/nom]That is a terrible analogy. Wikileaks didnt break into anything and that is the distinction. The material was handed over to them. Here is a better analogy. While you were breaking into a house you saw that the husband murdered the wife. You got it on film. You come to me and say "hey I videotaped this murder but I dont want to take it to the cops." You give me the tape and I take it to the cops. You should get arrested for breaking in. The husband should be held accountable for the murder. I should get a medal for putting a murderer in jail (not arrested).[/citation]

you forgot to finish the analogy. the video tapes get scripted and cut to show things in the most controversial point of light and taken totally out of context and shown on t/v just to get better ratings sell more papers and make more money, the husband and wife doing the deed is seen by the children. the family of the husband whom he had told them he found out she was slipping him poison in his food, so she could get the insurance money and run off with the guy she was cheating on her husband with and those kids some how or another end up killing the guy their mom was cheating with and later find out was their real father. kid goes to prison, and nobody wins, but alot more tragedy ensues, some guy writes a book about it and makes millions at the expense of lives ruined and people killed. schizophrenics the world over start killing their spouses after reading the book. the end.

by the way what do you call people with stolen secrets of one country or another: spies.
pretty much covered by the term espinoage
Espionage or spying involves an individual obtaining information that is considered secret or confidential without the permission of the holder of the information. Espionage is inherently clandestine, lest the legitimate holder of the information change plans or take other countermeasures once it is known that the information is in unauthorized hands.

Espionage is inherently clandestine, lest the legitimate holder of the information change plans or take other countermeasures once it is known that the information is in unauthorized hands.

Espionage is usually part of an institutional effort by a government or corporation, and the term is most readily associated with state spying on potential or actual enemies, primarily for military purposes. Spying involving corporations is known as industrial espionage. Government surveillance of civil society groups, social movements, and individuals involved in political activism, such as COINTELPRO conducted by the FBI, is not covered by the present article.

[citation][nom]blackened144[/nom]You keep calling him a troll but I dont think you understand what the word really means.. It doesnt matter at all what you think of Wikileaks... Anyone viewing classified documents without authorization AND clearance is in violation of the law. Even if you have "top secret" clearance, you are still not allowed to view classified material unless you have a "need to know"... Also, you keep trying to say that its not illegal to posses classified material if your not the one that stole it? Are you really that dumb? Do you know how many people are in prison right now for possession of stolen property that they themselves did not steal?[/citation]

They are in jail over stolen property not information. And check out the freedom of press laws. If what you were saying is true there would be no investigative journalism anywhere. Hell there would be no journalists at all.

wow idk what happened there with that last post was just a simple copy and past into a quote

dbl posted quote and a non quote got pasted. ah well sorry about that

So how does all this apply to someone who is not an American Citizen? Why does he have to abide by American Laws? Seems to me if he is going to be prosecuted by Americans then he should be able to vote and collect social security benefits.

You dont need to have done anything illegal to be sent to a CIA black site in eastern europe... I never asked for a trial.

Any empire falls apart. Rome empire did as well. Currently, U.S. influence in the world becomes weaker and weaker. It was primarily economic dominance that helped the U.S. to become the main power in the world, not the military power. If you trace history after WWII, U.S. had numerous, but small wars against small and weak countries such as Vietnam. However, as other countries develop more and more economically, the U.S. loses its power. Funny, we (U.S.) even ended up needing China to bail us out of 2008 crisis that started in the U.S.

@princeofdreams

Like my analogy or not, the bottom line is people keep defending wiki-leaks based on "the truth" that it exposes. My point is that whether the information "exposes" something or not relevant to whether the information was legally obtained, legal to posses, or legal to publish.

Also, many like yourself are so quick to point out how the information is not a security risk. How do you know that? Based on what type of experience in the national security arena? There are people who are highly trained to identify information that could be considered a security risk, especially when combined with other seemingly innocent information. Maybe the information is totally harmless, other than the embarrassment it causes. As soon as you become a national security expert and read and analyze all 400,000 documents in detail, I'll be happy to take your word for it.

[citation][nom]f-14[/nom]i want direct laws cited saying you have rights as an american citizen to this info. i've already stated laws that prohibit you from explicitly having it with articles straight from the consitution itself as well as newer laws some as recent as the digital encryption act signed by billy clinton himself that tie into exactly this sort of thing.i understand where you guys are comming from, i don't like all the back door dirty politics going on either.what your failing to see is these wiki guys are provoking open agression of countries that hate the freedoms and values and ways of life of the united states and it's way of forcing them to adopt them when those countries. did you fail to notice north korea is suddenly threatening nuclear war on the south koreans and against the united states right after this b.s. started leaking esp. when alot of it pertains to north korea? lets not forget nuclear armed pakistan and all the british, and american and nato forces parked right across the border from them. pakistan is already having a hard time staving off war with it's neighbor india, which is also nuclear armed?has nothing about world war 1 and world war 2 taught you nothing?do you not see the out right manipulation by the british,and french governments on american foriegn policy ever since world war 2? it certainly isn't the common american peoples interests to get involved in the civil wars of north and south korea or vietnam.it was defintely in the interests of the bankers and arms dealers and makers. we are still reaping some benefit from those wars to this day. try following the money trail if you want accountability and explanations , that is all public information under campaign finanacial disclosure.i'd rather strong arm the rest of the world into forced submittal of democracy and make them live by modern standards i believe every one should have american rights and freedoms, that'd be leading into a federated planet and i couldn't care less about the rest of the world esp. when they want to live in the midevial era like the muslims!i guess you don't care since the 3rd world war is going to be the war that ends all wars and the countries ready to start it are looking for excuses over any slight.i get the whole anti-sheeple movement, i really do, but jeapordizing peoples lives and safety that aren't part of the problem is the wrong way to do this. esp when some pompus @$$ can't tell the difference between a camera tri pod and an rpg and a group of people either aiding or not stopping them from trying to kill my friends and family which those american journalist were obligated to do.if you still don't understand what i'm getting at, it's the equivelant of me killing any one who got in my way to stop the people in washington from being evil/corrupt/stupid.or poisoning all the drugs in the world killing all the users just to stop the drug wars. exaggerated over dramatic examples, but hey, it would work!this is not the federation of planets and we are a long way from even thinking about trying to start that type of idealism into practical world means. peace takes along time, more then you can imagine global threats only take a few minutes.[/citation]
Wrong quote, I wanted to quote this one.

[citation][nom]f-14[/nom]first and formost, that information is classified, if you're not authorized to handle classified material YOU WILL GO TO JAIL in america whether you are american or not, if your not aermican you face espionage and spying charges. things would not be classified if it was okay for just any one to look at them, READ THE LAWS ON IT FIRST. second these classified documents and communications were digitally encrypted, so you also face not only FCC violation charges but also the digital encryption act where if you are not labeled specifically as a key holder you have NO RIGHT TO HANDLE OR VIEW SAID DOCUMENTS/TRANSMISSIONS/KEYS TO DECRYPT OR DECYRPTION. that was also passed buring the time of the digital millenium copy right act to handle new forms of commiting treason that were not explicitly labeled as covered under the constitution of the united states.the thing you need to ask yourself is if you are willing to risk your freedom, your life, and everything you own just to see this stuff. also a tip from connections i have, the man is tracking this stuff and person(s) connected with this, it may not be used against you, unless you give them reason to. they understand they can't prosecute every one, but watch your step next time you run a red light or get a dui, or anything else illegal. i was specifically told to watch my step and not even jay walk if i have any connection with this material, and this was by long time friends that have more security clearances then every one on toms put together.[/citation]
The government has already passed the internet censorship act... I meant the net neutrality act now we all can become trolls like him ^

LOL The news should be held responsible for distributing information. Isn't that what their supposed to do...

Ha, and the Government tells us to spy on our neighbors or suspicious people and narc on them. It's pretty much what this guy did. Damn hypos.

[citation][nom]cookoy[/nom]does an owner of a website have to give a reason for anything it does?[/citation]

Oblivious? Not even close. The files were obtained illegally which opens up anyone that helps view them to lawsuits. It would have been asinine for Apple to leave that app up. My views on weather the information should be known or not has nothing to do with this story.

@husker,

What part of he is not American, don't you understand, he is NOT subject to American laws, he is from Australia where him publishing those documents IS legal. Your laws are only relevant to YOUR country. Whether you like to think it or not, America is NOT in charge of the world

You really should watch this, and watch it all, then come back and try to defend your comments

The truth needs to be told, horrendous things are being done, and we are being made complicit because we just believe everything told us with asking questions, we vilify those who expose the truth and threaten to question the government. Governments its security, the threat of terrorism yet tell me, since 9/11 how many people have died from terrorist attacks in America? Now tell me how many have died in Iraq? over a million, 90% of which are innocent civilians, over 900,000 innocent men, women and children to root out a terrorist network that doesn't exist, and never existed in Iraq, over 900,000 innocent men women and children killed to protect the US of A from weapons of mass destruction that NEVER existed.

All war is about Money, All secrets are about covering up the money, people, innocent people are dying every day to make money for arms companies, for oil companies, for mineral rights, its about stimulating a flagging and dying American economy, its murder for profit, and while you blinker yourself and hide from it you make yourself complicit and wash your own hands in their blood

Well the responsible person is in jail because of that law but the law punished just the responsable for it, if the press want it to publish that info even in america, is because they are doing their job, not every1 involved have to go to jail like u want, because when is it ends, imagine i run over a person and go to jail but according to you, the car manufacturer have to go to jail cuz the brakes werent powerfull enough to prevent the accident, so the manufacturer go to jail because he distribuited the means of this death occurred, also the employees that made the brakes, dont stop there also the designer and importer/ exporter involve, also the university where they adquired those knowledges and so on so on ... if a country dont take appropiate measures o procedures that were bad designed in the firstplace to protect this information and the documents were stole, well they fail in their jobs, is their fault, ... A responsible and not a corrupted goverment has anything to be afraid of, they are making this laws not to protect our asses they are doing this laws to protect theirs, and if anyone betray them kill him/her because i already made the law to be obey and in the meantime i can do whatever i pleased and companies with interest on them can paid more for destroying other citizens rights in other countries in order our companies succeed, usually the rich ones benefit from this not the large masses, for example ...mr president i cant invest in arabia cuz the laws in that country prevent them... whant can i do, ... well we use diplomacy (spy them true america embassy) and see whos behind the protection of their citizens rights but hes a cheating his wife, well expose his dirty secrets and paid the opposite members to sign a treat with our country and more companies can invest there but son theres a price, 10% of the income are for the goverment and ur free to do whatever to want there... see this happens all the time ... thats why we need to do things right because later other countries can end in civil wars and destroy other countries leaders with good intentions for their own people and end up like Venezuela...becoming a socialist country because nobody trust in their leaders anymore...

I read the first 10 or so post and it practically made me ill.

It's time that the US (and it's people), which is a large powerful country where corruption is rampant and the top 10% of the wealth holders control the other unfortunate 90% of people, came last in the world.

What I'm saying is that there's so many 'dopes' who can't really think for themselves, who prefer a corrupt govt to think for them. Quoting laws from their country as though they apply to everyone in the world. A country that until this year didn't even take care of its sick, and now that they do people are calling the president all sorts of names. It's a waste of time responding further to these right wing idiots, soon China will be running the show and hopefully by then they clean their act up, or we'll all be going through a new wave of idiocy like we are now due to the evil empire that thinks it is some sacred cow just because it's the fattest cow.

It's just that many Americans think that U.S. is the center of the world and that every other country revolves around the U.S. This is something that every country that comes to power starts suffering. Nothing special about that.

I just wish Assange would get out of the UK. The man is a hypocrite of the first order- just look at him saying that the information abotu his alleged sexual misdemeanours has been released solely in order to tarnish his reputation. The pot calling the kettle black...

Let boil this down to what it really is. The documents were not leaked, they were stolen. Someone without authorization to transport these documents outside the facility did so. He took them without permission, therefore they are stolen. These stolen COPIES were given to someone else.

From what I understand, possession of stolen property IS illegal.
