It would depend on your TV. If you are just comparing over-the-air for a tuner box vs a built-in tuner, they should be about the same if your TV has an over-the-air HD tuner. If your TV is older then you may HAVE to get a separate tuner box.

The quality of HD tuners does vary so it will depend on the TV and the tuner. A TIivo Bolt or Channel Master is likely to have a better tuner than most TVs but they are not cheap.
