Will laptop base work if separated from monitor?

Hello,
I have an HP Pavilion 2000 with a broken lid hinge. It has caused my screen to go black. I have no problem viewing via an external monitor but am wondering if I can go ahead and completely separate the monitor/lid from the base. I'd like to use the keyboard/base without the dead floppy laptop monitor between me and the external screen.

Should be okay, I've done it with a broken Dell once. Probably wiser to unplug the screen's cable where it meets the motherboard, rather than just cut the ribbon cable-- certainly don't try that with the battery in or power connected.
