Windows Defender continues to turn off no matter what I do....in Windows 7....

I have a refurbished HP PC that I use mainly for work, but I am wondering if I should install something because Windows Defender continues to shut off rather consistently, and I am afraid of not being protected on a continuous basis. Should I just disable Defender and install something else? Or is there something that I haven't tried yet, so as to solve this issue? Please advise, I am getting increasingly nervous, and am feeling exposed....

installing a new anti virus will automatically disable windows defender. i would just get a free one for now. avira is rated really well as far as free ones go. https/www.avira.com/
