that you want.. for instance like a dine-o-,ate coupon book. or if your GF shops for sexy panties at VS and she gets an add on the phone for VS she signed up for and its 5 for 20 buck panties... or if you like dvds or games u get an add for $20 Ironman 2 and u woulda paid 25. more like a coupon in a pocket perhaps than some evil ad serving machine....

I see this as an important advancement to ensure that anyone who has somehow missed the never ending SPAM for Viagra, Cialis, and Extenze don't miss out!

As long as the ads don't pop up, it doesn't bother me. I think that since they say I can opt out, makes it ok if I don't like it. There are many times where I click on a ad for a movie or some product that I did end up buying or using. If done right, I don't think it will be a big deal.

From what I understand this is only for aps you download. So I get Pepsi's ap because I want to coupons or whatever, then when they have an offer it either slides down from the top or appears on their icon. While I doubt I would want it for Pepsi it would be neat for say Living Social or Groupon.

Has anyone ever heard "Don't knock it till you try it?" I think you need to at least test out any type of phone(whether OS or hardware) before you say it's bad... Before you start bashing Droid, iOS4, or WP7 you need to know what it's actually like to know how good/bad it is for yourself.

if all the phone companies start to provided unlimited data plans and good speeds then this would not be a problem, tbh we already deal with ads on computers so if they do it right they could get away on the phones... but not when data is NOT unlimited or caped

You can opt out of the ads. Therefore, giving the user a choice to have them or not. Thanks MS!

[citation][nom]walt526[/nom]Thanks for taking the time to list those. My initial reaction to each as it relates to me, as a prospective smartphone buyer:1) "Better UI" seems pretty subjective given that there isn't a consensus pick among smartphone users of existing interfaces (anecdotally, it seems that it's whatever the particular user is used to using).2) This isn't really an issue for iPhones and BB's. It has been an issue with some of the lesser Droid phones (simple solution for users being don't buy a cheap smartphone--which I wouldn't, if I were going to get a smartphone).3) I personally don't own an XBOX and couldn't care less about this.4) Aren't there Droid apps that deliver a solid MP3 player?5) I do agree that lack of Flash support is a major drawback of iOS and BB.6) Every smartphone OS on the market right now that I know of (Android, iOS, BB, webOS) supports MSFT ActiveSync. What will WP7 be able to do that these others can't?7) This is probably more of a key feature for users who are apprehensive for storing files in a cloud service, like Dropbox. On whole, I see the potential for it to compete fiercely with BB for corporate users (particularly if there features of MSFT Exchange that can only be utilized by the WP7). But, aside from the XBOX Live (which has limited appeal, IMHO), I'm not seeing very much that it offers consumers that isn't already available from at least one of the existing smartphone platforms.[/citation]

- The better UI is not subjective many reviewers already agree the metro UI brings better functionality since you do not have to scroll or switch too many pages for apps the hubs incorporate the apps making it better for the user to go there, after you have owned an iphone for a while and downloaded many apps u will know how annoying it is to switch screen just to get to one app

- It is not about not buying a "cheap" smartphone, a normal person would not even know the difference spec wise between a htc hero and an evo but might want to buy a smart phone anyway, with windows phone 7 at least he will always get the opportunity to have the same user experience as the next person without having to learn every tech news or detail about a phone...not buying a "cheap" smart phone is not a solution for the average non geek or techie buyer

- XBOX live does not necessarily require you to own an xbox at least not on windows phone 7, you will be able to play several xbox live games on your phone regardless and if you do own an xbox it is even better since you can play games on both platforms or against other xbox live users, from the get go this makes it a compelling gaming device as well, plus even if you do not own an xbox there are millions of people who do,you can only speak for yourself.

4) Droid apps that deliver solid mp3 players? No, good enough maybe but not great it has been a problem for android for a while, the iphone still has the better player and a phone with the zune player incorporated in it will be an instant second (or first depending on who you talk to) android is yet to get a solid app that can give you a similar experience to iphone/itunes or wp7/zune

5)We both agree that flash is major point for wp7 and android

6) As a business solution windows phones have always been solid, solid encryption programs and dirt easy integration with microsoft exchange make wp7 a better business phone, after all MSFT owns both, it is only natural that they will make the integration with their product better than BB or any other phone

7) It is a big deal for a lot people, windows offers you more options since you can sync with your home system or in the cloud seamlessly this is something that other phone companies have not handled properly although they are all going for the cloud right now, nevertheless i will concede that by this time next year almost every phone will have this feature

However i am not saying that wp7 will be the second coming but it will be compelling enough to make a difference, it is basically capable of appealing to a very broad spectrum, solid business phone but with much better features than the BB, solid media phone but with some features missing in the iphone (Flash and XBOX live) ,solid gaming device as well (you should see the games they are getting) and most importantly a consistent model thus you will have various choices as far as hardware and specs but a pretty consistent user experience across the board, something google should have done with android...i think the phone will help microsoft stop the bleeding in their mobile OS sales and probably it will affect BB the most and still be a significant addition in the smartphone segment overall

What's next, ads in Microsoft Office?

I understand that ads are a source of revenue for many companies, but sometimes they just aren't appropriate. I can see these ads interfering with customers' ability to use their phones and ultimately resulting in a lot of bad press for Apple and Microsoft both.

Amazing that so many people comment without having a clue...
This article is flawed and the author have not done their research.
The technology they refer to is a feature for developers to push notification in their apps. It's not to be misconstrued as Microsoft will send you unsolicited ads, that will not happen.
However as 'giffy' points out, if you download an app from Pepsi, they will be able to send you ads that pops up, hopefully Pepsi would inform the user of this feature and allow them to switch it it. So quit making a fuss about a feature which you have no knowledge about.

The replies to this are hilarious. Just goes to show most people don't read the whole article, don't understand what they read, or read what they want. Of course it doesn't help the article was very poorly written with a terrible headline.

[citation][nom]Ragnar-Kon[/nom]Having an ad slide down the screen while the app isn't even active is uhh... a deal breaker for me.For once, I might actually agree with Apple and their new ad system. At least ads won't bother me when the app isn't active.[/citation]

apparently you didn't read the entire story. The ad software "toast" is opt-in/opt-out. Meaning if you don't want to receive the ads.. you don't have to. However if there is an app that send you specials that you don't want to miss out on, then you may want to opt-in.

Simple enough. Don't discredit the product that gives you the option and not a forced function.

[citation][nom]rooseveltdon[/nom]- Better user interface than either android or ios4 (or BB for that matter)- Minimum spec requirements ensure that every device will make best use of the mobile OS..instead of having some phones that can handle the OS and some that can't- connectivity to XBOX live, something no other phone has- Zune music player included in the phone (other than the iPhone no one else is close in providing a better music experience)- They have stated that they will provide support for Flash soon after initial release....only android does that as of right now- microsoft exchange...nuff said- easy syncing with any windows computerSo yeah the mobile OS is better than you give it credit for, as long as they come out with compelling apps and market it properly this phone will be a success in fact i feel bad for RIM they will probably be a casualty...i remember when people were saying the same thing about windows 7 and the first XBOX and both of those turned out to be huge successes[/citation]
You forgot the one (in my opinion) thing that will set this phone apart from all others: development tools.

You will be able to create applications with a combination of Silverlight, Visual Studio, and XNA. Along those lines, for Silverlight, you get to use tools like Expression Blend. No other phone will have a remotely comparable set of IDE's.

I have used Xcode for Cocoa Touch/iOS. It sucks.

You perfectly right, the tools that they are providing for developersd also make a compelling case, the games and apps for this Mobile OS should be very very good

Including advertising on a cell phone is illegal, as it constitutes fraud, of rendered services for the service fee's intended purposes.

Back boneing ad revenue while charging a monthly service fee which is not stilpulated in the contract is illegal, as they cant charge you a fee and give you unsolicited 3rd party vendor ads that you did not agree to pay for in the service contract.

If they sell you an ad based phone with a discounted or free service contract and its stated as such then thats a choice, free phone service for letting them place ads to you. But charging a fee and also forcing unsolicited advertising through that mechanism is fraud of services rendered. Phone service fee charges are for phone call useage only, not them advertising revenue though your service fee's intended purposes.

Imagine if your a doctor that services 911 calls, and you get a late night emergency someone having a heart attack,

"" So sorry cant speak to you right, I now need to wait 30 seconds for this ad commerercail to pass before I can properly answer the phone to take your call, so if you die its not my fault""
lol

I think phone design has taken a step back in the past years, I am due for a new phone within a year and am hoping the Win7 phone will be a step forward, if not, I am just going to buy a cheap Sumsung flip, they seam to work better as a phone than my HTC diamond.

This is ****** reporting. What kind of title is that? Its misleading and now a bunch of people who didn't bother to read the article and look more into this think "Oh no WP& will just bombard me with ads"! You can opt-in for certain ads so you can get info about a new update available and the like. And, its OPTIONAL!
