Hello all -

Glad I found this group. I'm sure someone here can help.

I acquired a 256MB memory card for my iPAQ 1910 and am now itnerested
in viewing wmv files on my device, purchased in May '03. Evidently I
have the only PPC on the planet that did not come with WMP for PPC.

I see on MS' site the latest WMP-for-PPC version available is 7.1. I
tried to install it to no avail, then noticed on the sys reqirements
section of the MS page that I must have 7.0 installed in order to
install the upgrade. I went in search of 7.0 and found it at
downseek.com. I tried to install it, and again got the message that my
device was not compatible with the version.

My suspicion is that I need some sort of "prerequisite" installation
- a plugin perhaps related to pocket IE. I recall at one time I
installed some other media-viewing app that informed me I needed a
WMP-related installation (they may have used the word "plugin" - i do
not remember). The nice thing was that it provided a place to download
what I needed.

My questions:

1) Does anyone know what prerequisite installation I may be referring
to?

2) If so, does anyone know where to get it?

3) Why is it that all my friends that have PPCs recieved WMP for PPC
with their purchase and I did not? has it always been a standard
inclusion?

Anyone? Please help, I'm dyin' here! I have a 256 meg card that I
swapped a bunch of slightly old hardware for with a buddy and it's of
little use to me if i can't throw some vids on it. I need to get WMP!

It definitely does not *have* to be WMP, but I strongly prefer it to be
a player that handles WMV files. NOTE: nothing I have would involve any
DRM (excellent point though). Essentially I am looking to render a
full-length movie or three to a very compact wmv file for viewing on
PPC (just for kicks, really - nothing manadatory going on here). I'd
also like a player that rotates the display 90 degrees to maximize use
of the PPC screen.

Any recomendations that meet this criteria? Beta Player perhaps?

Thanks beverly - no such dir on my device. I reformatted last night so
for all I know it was there then but it definitely is not now.

UPDATE:

I installed Beta Player and am watching a sample clip their site
provided (Matrix Reloaded trailer). AWESOME setup. This solves
everything, especially with the pocket divx encoder. My main desire for
wmv support was the flexibility the user has with customizing the specs
of a wmv file. It looks like this pocket divx encoder does the same
thing. THANK YOU!!!!

Does it have to be WMP? How about checking on a different (more friendly)
video player, such as Beta Player. Or are the videos DRMed WMVs?

Are you sure it's not installed? Take a look in \Windows for "Player"

If it's there, you can create a shortcut, by tap-hold/copy, then go to
\windows\start_menu and select "paste shortcut"

The sad part is that Beta player and others will not handle WMV. A few
will work if you rename them AVI, depending on the codec used. You can rip
them to mpeg or divx and play it will different players, including Beta
Player and Pocket MVP. One thing about older MP versions was that it would
not maintain positions when you powered off and on, something that at least
I would do in the process of watching a video on the PPC.


You find out some more information at http/betaplayer.corecodec.org/,
along with a link to some divx encoders. So far the .094 unstable version
seems okay.

And if you are open to mpeg, there are a lot of players and encoders out
there, but Tsunami mpeg encoder is IMHO one of the best.

But if you want WMV with a newer encoding method,which might require WMP,
you might want to look up the companion CD that came with the product-
according to the information I can find MP is not in the rom, but version 8
shipped on the disc with the unit (But then you probably knew this).

So, the end result is, if you really need WMP 8 for the 1910, I am really
not much help.

Ok, so in order to get Beta Player to recognize WMV files, you must
have WMP installed on the PPC as well - that's what I'm getting from
this. Is this correct?

If not, which plugins do I use for the latest so-called "unstable"
version of beta player? I have the unstable version installed (works
fine for me with divx files!) and both the AAC and MPC plugins and I
still cannot get beta player to recognize WMV files. Are there other
plugins from somewhere other than the source linked from the beta
player home page?

If so, I am back to square one with regards to playing wmv - but at
least I have a solid solution for playing full-length movies. And the
pocket Divx encoder was INCREDIBLY fast! I had Kill Bill Vol 2 in Divx
on my desktop already and it re-encoded it in 12 minutes!

Did you check your HP software CD? the 1910 is the low end HP with the
small ROM right? Most PPC's have wmp in the ROM, but some of the small ones
leave out "optional" ms software like wmp and ms reader, but distribute them
on the cd to be optionally installed in RAM.

Forget WMP, install Betaplayer. It's free, it's good and can even play
WMV-files. 90° rotation (pretty standard feature IMO) is available and
lots more. A new (stable, though 'unstable' is relative in this case)
was just released:

Download betaplayer.arm.cabs.STABLE.0.5.zip, unzip it and take a look
at readme.txt. You'll probably need BetaPlayer.ARM_CE3.CAB. Transfer
this file to your PPC and open it to install Betaplayer. If you want,
then you can also install a couple plugins in order to play MPC- and
AAC-files. (MP3 is supported by default.)

I've been using the program recently (I used 0.095, but am now using
0.5) and it's great. Playing DivX/Xvid (full) movies (140-175 MiB) is
not a problem, nor is playing WMV-files.

Just so. The 1910 was the first PPC I ever owned, and WMP is definitely on
the CD and has to be installed. If you don't have the CD, then you're out
of luck unless you can either order it from HP or find it on eBay.

What plugin pack did you add to get it? It might be a difference between
behaviors on systems, or it could be something rather silly I am doing, but
it does not support WMV for me on either the setup screen (if not using cabs
directly) or on the device. I did redownload 0.5 as a test.

Well, it appears the the problem lies with the OS drivers and the asf
plugin - the structure changes with MP10. So for now WMV and Betaplayer do
not get along if you have WMP10.. but just give picard a little time..

(If anyone knows otherwise I will happily be wrong about this... )

Yes, apparently you do need to have wmp 7, 8 or 9 (or more correctly the
codec subsystem) in order for beta player to decode the wmv stream. WMP 10
will not work at this time, the interface has changed (As is my case, come
to find out).

I only installed the MPC-plugin, but that shouldn't have anything to
do with it.

Weird. I'm using WM2003 and WMP 9.0 build 14053.

Well, I do have the CD and have examined it pretty thoroughly - found a
bunch of stuff I didn't know was on it - Pocket Adobe Acrobat Reader,
Pocket Real Player, etc - but alas I am still not finding WMP on it.

If there's anyone kind enough to either locate the installation file on
their disc and post the path to get to it, or even email me the exe
that they have, I would be enormously appreciative. As I mentioned I
have throroughly examined the contents of the CD and could not locate
it on here.
