my old woofer popped with volume at 3 sansui 12 inch woofer in cerwin vega 280se (1989) refoamed, changed it to new gold wood HD -still popping. i had volume to 4.5 in the past

It's probably the coil.

Too much power into not enough woofer.
If you use bass boost that drives the woofer harder so more likely to overdrive it.
