Why do people even bother making that type of "been there done that" machines? I mean, i'm not impressed by big marketing farts anymore, and products like that just don't cut it in my book.

[citation][nom]coolcash1777[/nom]This scanner reminds me of one of the best products out there, the dvd re-winder, http://www.dvdrewinder.com/[/citation]
Sorry for double post - but was this for real? I mean was it really for sale and people actually bought it? HAHAHAHA!

There is two things wrong with the title of this article. First, this isn't the world's first 3D scanner. Like others have mentioned, There are systems that have been on the market for several years already like the NextEngine. Second, this isn't a 3D scanner, more like a 360 deg image/presentation scanner, like what most online retailer is using to display their products. You see this most auto manufacturers website to see the cars in 360 view.

[citation][nom]maigo[/nom]NOT the first. They've been on the market for years or you could just build one for little more than the cost of a camera.[/citation]

Agreed. I've been sorta wanting to make my own for the last couple of years.

But yea, thats really lame if it can't be used in Maya/other 3d programs. There is software out there that allows you to scan 3D objects, yet be able to use them in Maya and other 3D programs.

The DVD-Rewinder (compatible with all formats of CD & DVD and even includes Blu-Ray) was / is a real product. They are sold out.

Its a GAG device as the site states It doesn't really re-wind anything. it makes noises, spins a disc and flashes lights. And a handy dandy storage tray too!

For those who grew up with VHS - the $10~15 rewinders we handy to lower stress on the VHS motors, it was faster... only problem was that some could destroy your tapes too.

I didn't know it was April 1st already.

Hey, it's not April 1st! What gives? is Kevin Parrish really that strained for story ideas?

What a fraud!

1) There have been REAL 3D scanners for DECADES.
2) THIS ain't one--not even close! JPEGs?! WTF?! That's not 3D modeling *at all*!
3) You can put together something that will do the real thing for FAR, FAR cheaper, and it will be far, far superior. (Photomodeler + digital camera + cheap computer system: cost: < $2500. And you probably already have the camera and the computer, so--$995)

4) You could put together something that will do EXACTLY what this does for next to nothing. Cheap turntable or lazy susan plus digital camera plus one of those little light box thingies people like to use for photographing stuff to sell online.

5) Interactive? Interactive my ass--it is not!
(And what is this,anyway--1992?)

Anyone who would buy something like this is a idiotic fool with too much money on their hands.

This has GOT to be a joke. It HAS to be.
-------------------------------

If you follow the links back, it's advertised as an "OFFICE PHOTOGRAPHY MACHINE." Designed to make it easier to photograph objects for 3D Flash views, etc. That's exactly what it is, but $17,000 is still ridiculous for what it is.

I need something to take one photo, give me the dimensions, and also record the weight. Would be nice if it had .NET libraries as well. Any suggestions?
