Solved! Yamaha surround receiver

Need help hooking up my Yamaha rx-v379 reciever to my Xfinity 1 cable box to listen to surround sound.

You can connect via optical, coaxial or composite. What cables do you have?

I have optical and hdmi . I go from the cable box to the receiver . With both. Thought for sure using the optical would work. Should I route the cables in a different way

HDMI alone should work. HDMI carries both video + audio.

Should I hook cable box to receiver then receiver out to tv?

Oops... I forgot to add HDMI on the list. The other poster is correct. HDMI is the preferred connection because it can handle lossless surround sound. Your setup will be the following:

Xfinity 1 cable box ----- HDMI -----> Yamaha RX-V379 ----- HDMI -----> TV
